Definitely one of my favorite songs on the album. I take it as messing up with a loved one, and it being too late. But they want a chance still, even if in reality there isn't one. So good.

im hearing it right now its like if they screwed up in a relationship and want to take it all back and make things work even though theres no hope.

I think all the songs on this album link together. Car Underwater where he kills himself because he didn't want to be a burden to an ex because he still loved her.

And this song, Awkward Last Words, where he regrets what he did and so when he is in another life and she is there with him, he will try and perfect what he did wrong making the relationship perfect. I could be wrong though.

I think this might mean that the guy met a girl that he truly could have (and maybe should have) loved, but he'd made past mistakes and had already given away his heart in a relationship that didn't last. "I never had the gift of holding on to you" could suggest that he wanted this girl so badly, but he could never have her because he had no heart to give her; he had already given away his heart to someone else.

I think the closest interpretation of the song is deathbycaryons. i was just at an armor for sleep show, and ben said that the song was about crushes, and finding new love. however, i dont think that he gave his heart to someone else necessarily, more like, it was in another place.

i love this song to death.

People, What To Do When You're Dead is a concept album. They're telling a story. deathbycrayon, your idea is a fair one, except you don't seem to know about it being a concept album. In Car Underwater, the character kills himself by driving into a lake or something. In The Truth About Heaven, he comes back down to earth and tells his girlfriend that it suck cause she isn't there. In Remember to feel real... I really don't know. It might be him overhearing some stuff his "friends" said after his death and getting pissed off about it. This song is about his regrets for what he did, because even in death, he still loves his girlfriend. And this is him saying that he wants to be reborn and I guess he's trying to say that he's going to find some way of doing it.
