Father's Son Lyrics
In the glare of a neon sign
She laid her body down
The damned walked in beside her
And he laid his money down
He said "don’t try to scream now
But I want this one to hurt"
Tonight my pretty one
I’m gonna get my money’s worth
He said they never listened
She said they’d never understand
Then I don’t this for pleasure
I just do it cause I can
I swear I didn’t want to
And I swear I didn’t know
Things like this could happen to a 17-year old
And I’ve bundled up all of these fears inside
And I’ve bottled up all of this pain
No one or nothing can take this away
But I won’t let it happen again
Never again
In the haze of a smoky room
He chokes that bottle down
It’s been a month since he saw her face underneath the blood stained gown
He thinks about that little girl and the one he has at home
And wonders what if that was my little girl walkin down that road alone
And I’ve bundled up all of these fears inside
And I’ve bottled up all of this pain
And no one or nothing can take this away
But I won’t let it happen again
Never again
Maybe I’m just crazy or the devil got inside
Either way my soul is gone, and I'll end this all tonight
The one hand throws the whiskey, and the other throws the gun
As he cries out to the heavens
I am not my father’s son
And I’ve bundled up all of these fears inside
And I’ve bottled up all of this pain
And no one or nothing can take this away
But I won’t let it happen again
Never again

Some of you were actually pretty close but nobody got the whole thing right. I have actually heard Brad Arnold (the lead singer)'s interpretation of this song. The prostitute was 17 years old, the man payed her for her services but then beat her, raped her without a condom and (accidentaly) impregnated her.(that happened in the first verse). One month later he is drunk and starting to regret what he did because he has a little girl at home, (that happens in the second verse. Now the 3rd verse is where this song seems to have lost you guys. That is not the man who raped and beat her who is thinking of commiting suicide, it is the son that was created that night. He knows that his mother was raped and beat and he has become an alchoholic and one night when he is drunk he is thinking about suicide because he has felt like he is turning into his father "but one hand throws the whiskey and the other throws the gun, as he crys out to the heavens i am not my father's son".....(he decided not to do it)....i hope this has cleared some things up, and if you listen to the song again you might see what im talking about
It did clarify, I had gotten some of it, but then different people has different interpretations of it thanks for posting!!

no disrespect but I can easily type that I heard Brad Arnold interpret the song also. Even though I didn't. This interpretation doesn't make complete sense.

If the third verse was the son, then why does he say the devil got inside him? He didn't rape anyone. Why does he say he's crazy? He's not the crazy one. What must he end? Just his drinking problem? Don't think so. No one or nothing can take this away is the damned guy saying what he's done can never be undone but he can stop it and make sure it never happens again. I think the third verse is still the damned guy.

Also why would the son feel HIS soul is gone. He would embrace having a soul that his father didn't possess. No way the third verse is the son. I would have to hear Brad Arnold say that himself and not read it hear. Everything on the internet ISNT true.

Could someone explain this song to me? I actually heard it for the first time at one of their concerts this summer and it confuses me. I don't know whether the girl was raped or a prostitute...I'm just confused. Anyone with an idea....let me know!!! Thanks so much!
Name of the song is "Father's Son" As in child, not the bright star at the center of our solar system.
yea....bad typo on my part...its been fixed
i think shes a prostitute. some guy has his way with her. and when he is done he is rethinking it. he is ashamed of himself for what he's done.
it seems like its deeper than him just bein ashamed. bcuz ok, it starts off with him goin to the prostitute and having his way with her and finally realizes that what he did was wrong and thinks of his own daughter and in the end, gets drunk and then kills himself "The one hand throws the whiskey, and the other throws the gun" because hes turned out like his father and doesn't want it to be that way...if anybody thinks diferent, fill me in please....thanx
i think it's even more than that. see, the man goes to the prostitute and pretty much has it the way he wants it. - "don't try to scream now, but i want this one to hurt...i'm gonna get my money's worth"
then, a month later, he's at a bar looking back and he's realizing what he did, how much he hurt her and everything, and he starts to think that it could have been his daughter in the same situation as the prostitute. "it's been a month since he saw her face underneath that bloodstained gown...he wonders what if that was my little girl"
then, during another drinking binge, he starts to consider himself an evil person for what he did to the girl. so he grabs a bottle of whiskey and a gun and heads outside to end his life so it never happens again. "either way, my soul is gone. and i'll end this all tonight"
i also have to imagine that the "i am not my father's son" probably implies that the man's father may have been physically abusive towards his mother, since the whole thing is based upon what could be perceived as an act of violence against a prostitute.
i think the chorus just reiterates the feelings of remorse that the man has towards what he did; but i also think it's very cleverly constructed in that, initially, i think it means that he never wants to do that again and then it progresses to mean that he'll never do it again because he's dead.
that's just my interpretation. let me know if your opinion differs.
oh and the actual lyrics for the third line are "the damned walked in beside her", not "the man walked in beside her".
i agree, except for one part, i believe that the "i am not my fathers son" is refferin to god, father=god...

oh yeah, and the part where it says: the DAMNED walks in besides her,..

this song has all ready been spoken for... it is a young girl that he has sex with first time... bloodstained gown.... and he's married and has a daughter and wonders about her.. he thinks about killing himself, but stops because that is what his dad did in this situation.
"I am not my father's son" in my opinion tells me that the man who f8cked the prostitute knows that he has brought shame to his family's name, and he is trying to disown himself and/or his parents act like they don't know him.
