Hasten Down the Wind Lyrics

She tells him she thinks she needs to be free
He tells her he doesn't understand
She takes his hand
She tells him nothing's working out the way they planned

She's so many women
He can't find the one who was his friend
So he's hanging on to half her heart
He can't have the restless part
So he tells her to hasten down the wind

Then he agrees he thinks she needs to be free
Then she says she'd rather be with him
But it's just a whim
By which she hopes to keep him on the limb

She's so many women
He can't find the one who was his friend
So he's hanging on to half her heart
He can't have the restless part
So he tells her to hasten down the wind

I find it insulting that nobody has commented on this song. It's one of my favorites. It's so heartachingly wonderful in so many ways I can't even begin to describe. First of all there's the amazingly advanced and poetic meter/rhyming pattern. Second, there's the rhymes, the poetry, the lyrics themselves. Third- Warren's vocal delivery is remarkable, and a very tender side of him is expressed. I would love to hear how this song would sound by others, too. Neil Young, maybe, or Bob Dylan. It's just a classic. Surprising there aren't a billion cover-versions of it circulating around.

well i agree with you on that one. however, there are jackson browne and linda ronstadt covers of it, which are almost expected. they were some of the few to help him get known...to see his genius early. then again, it seems that a lack of public acknowledgment of zevon is expected, although a mystery.

TheThornBirds, let me start by saying I have loved your comments on Zevon songs--insightful, thoughtful, and wide ranging. Warren is indeed, missed, and he was always underappreciated.

Why the indignation about lack of comments on "Hasten Down the Wind"? Most people don't see or hear near what you do, and I say it sincerely. I wouldn't mind hearing Neil Young try it, but don't let Dylan get near this one.

The tenderness and sadness are almost overpowering in this song, to me it is about a relationship that seems it should be good, but somehow it's not clicking, the two can't hit on enough cylinders, can't relate the right way at the right time, and they know it. It breaks their hearts to part, but they know they have to because they just can't make it work and it will break their hearts to try to stay together.

I think I'm going to head over to Bob Dylan now and see if you have a note on "Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again."

hi from from tropico singapore.i actualy heard this song from linda ronstadt when i was a student.my first impression was her reading(gorgeous drawl) and laid back accompaniment took the song to a beautiful level that producer peter asher could envision(then again it could b ronstadt's).as she tortured ur thoughts that both lovers were never meant to be together in the first place!

yup warren zevon is truly an original genius!

I think [Sweet Baby] James Taylor would do this song justice, hauntingly. His voice, alone, seems to tell stories. :-)
