Astronimicoronary (In Reference to a Sinking Ship) Lyrics
O' my God hand us down our ribbons. you death defier you. far from fear we are, adrift and gone. after the fallout, after a million miles, adrift is the reason for the rain and we're in the undertow. stop dancing around in stories untold. the mind has conquered the whole heart. sewing an insecure thread of reason. i'll burn what it takes, drown what it takes. we're not going down with this ship. i burned 41 hills, for the love of academic ability.
that exceeds the love of searching for the truth. (we comprehend a massive array. can we comprehend simplicity?)

scogin is overrated, cory pretty much blows him out of the water.
I have no clue whatsoever, but for everyone who is wondering: this is the 1st song Cory vote for NJ the song is on the This Is Solid State Vol 5 comp. this song will NOT BE on O God The Aftermath.
i dont have too much of a clue but i really think i like this song
ok, this song IS on the new album, oddly enough, it's titled Pretendeavor now.
lyrics might change because i hope they re-recorded it, meaning that astronomicoronary being the version on the This Is Solid State Vol 5 sampler and Pretendeavor the album version.
thanks for messing with our minds, cory ;)
<yoda> Straightforward this band are not. Hmm? </yoda> Upon hearing this song my initial reaction was GRRRREAT, Luti-Kriss all over again (my favourite NJ persona). I have high hopes for the new album, Scogin or not.
first off let me say, that new Norma Jean freakin' rocks, I just bought it the other day and I could'nt belive my ears. Now it's no "Bless the matre and kiss the child" cause that cd is the best there is, that cd will pass the test of time, and will go into the record books of the greatest metal album of all time, but still "O God, the aftermath" is still kick butt, headbangin' metal, and I am not disamounted that I bought it.
Now onto what I think this song means: I think the sinking ship is sin. When he says (screams) "we're not going down with this ship" I think he means, we're not going down with sin, but the rest of the song I have no idea.
Keep screaming for Christ Norma Jean!!!
I think that in part, this song is saying that the Gospel- that Jesus died for our sins and rose again- is a very simple message, but we struggle to accept it because it doesn't fit our logic, and it's not fancy enough. and despite our ability to understand a great deal of the world through science and reason, we still have to stand in wonder at the power of God.
I've listened to this song over and over and over again (mainly cos I imagine what a sweet music vid you could make for it!) and I'm of the opinion that the song concerns the possibility that second great flood might have crossed our Creator's mind, and how NJ aren't just gonna accept that that's our fate and try to turn this world around and put us back on track.
I have to agree with machinegun a little on this. Socrates was put to death, some feel, because he chose reason over faith. IMO, man relies too heavily on his own reasoning and therefore cannot reconcile himself to God's commandments. God's commandments are simple yet we choose to reason our way around them when we only need to follow God. The "love of academic ability" is, in large part, what brings our culture down. That's not to say that knowledge should not be sought and that we should throw reason out the window. I merely believe that reason and knowledge should be secondary to faith.
Dude: Anti-Civ references endemic to metal. The ship is earth and how we treat it--which could be considered sin!--and is not inherently anti-science/reason. academic ability--not knowledge. should we use technology, just because we can? In the case of climate change, if we continue to use our fossil fuels, we will sink earth and go down with it.
