Music of the Night Lyrics
Nighttime sharpens; heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses
Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day
Turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night
Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before
Close your eyes; let your spirit start to soar
And you'll live as you've never lived before
Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it, secretly posses you
Open up your mind
Let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
Let your mind start a journey to a strange, new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to be
Only then can you belong to me
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me
Savor each sensation
Let the dream begin
Let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night
You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night.
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day
Turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before
Close your eyes; let your spirit start to soar
And you'll live as you've never lived before
Hear it, feel it, secretly posses you
Open up your mind
Let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to be
Only then can you belong to me
Touch me, trust me
Savor each sensation
Let the dream begin
Let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night
Help me make the music of the night.

In English Class we were made to compare this song to a short story we read. In the story a girl has to decide between two fates she has, basically of "good" and "evil" (to put it blatantly). This is a song a temptation, passion, lust and seduction. It is also very calming to listen to... you sort of fall into a trance just listening to the beautiful lyrics and sweet melody.
I agree that this beautiful song is meant to be a call to the heroine, a temptation. A seduction, not only of the physical sort, but also a seduction of the mind. I think that the choice to be made is a... lifestyle choice, essentially.
The song is meant to be an appeal to Christine's imagination, to turn away from one's practical side and give into the impractical, the dark, the beautiful/ugly. To live outside the boundaries of the (every)day. A call to the artist(?)inside.
The eventual showdown between the Phantom and Raoul (in addition to the surface action) represents a real struggle for Christine's psyche, to give herself entirely to the shadowy world of the artist/performer; or to live the traditional, private role as an upper-class wife of that era.
When Christine makes her final decision to flee the opera house with Raoul, we are left with the impression that she's left a part of herself behind, the diva/prima donna that she might have been. I personally get the impression that she will never perform professionally again.
This is a song of passion and love that reaches the soul and vibrates with life. This song symbolizes perverse love found in desperation and passion and sorrow. Of course, you may need to know the whole story to see this.
I can't believe nobody commented on this song! A song that can explain how music can impact one's life. (I know that's not what it means in the play; that's how I see it.)
what a great song
the phantom has a great voice
fabulous song
This is and absolutely beautiful song. Michael Crawford has a gorgeous voice as well. Such a meaningfull song and it just makes you want to be wrapped in the music forever!
THE LYRICS OF THIS SONG ARE WRONG!!!!!!!!!!! HOW COULD YOU!!!!!!!!!! I WOULD KNOW FOR I HAVE THE ALBEM AND SAW IT ONLY LAST WEEK (friday actualy but...)!!! HOW COULD YOU PUT THE WRONG LYRICS UP??????!?!?!?!?!?!
First of all, for the last two lines of the first stanza, The phantom says nothing because the only thing that rhymes with defenses is untenses, which isn't in the song.
second of all, no offense, but you totaly screwed up the entire second verse and you obviously just got the highlights version of the CD. I will write the correct lyrics here because i'm listening to The Music of the Night right now:
slowly, gently night unfurls its splendor grasp it, sense it tremulous and tender turn your face away from the garish light of day turn your thoughts away from cold unfeeling light and listen to the music of the night
thirdly, you forgot the third verse, which i will write out here (it has a different melody, be warned):
Close your eyes and surrendor to your darkest dreams Purge all thoughts of the life in you before Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar and you'll live as you've never lived before.
The fourth stanza is ok, but there are a few problems:
softly, deafly, Music shall surround you feel it hear it closing in around you open up you mind let your fantasies unwind in this darkness which you know you cannot fight the darkness of the music of the night Let your mind start journy through a strange new world Leave all thoughts of the world you new before Let your soul take you where you long to be only then can you belong to me
The last stanza is a-ok, and i now relize it is not your fault but the Movie and the highlight's CD that the wrong titles and Lyrics are up everywhere. SEE THE SHOW. or at least get the real CD. trust me.
sorry for flipping out. I listened to this version a few days ago and i kept cracking up because it was HILARIOUS! it was fast and incorrect. i was trying to french and math and it was hard because i kept giggling.
