I Ain't Goin' Down Lyrics
I’m going to hold on--
Cause what I believe in is so strong
No matter how long, no one
Can tell me I’m wrong--I ain’t going down
I had a baby at fifteen--
Daddy never did forgive me
I never heard from the guy again
I had to drop out of high school--
Everybody treated me so cruel
But I didn’t give in and giver her away
[Repeat chorus]
Her smile got me through the day--
And every night I’d pray
I could give her enough
At night I’d lie awake and cry--
Hoping we’d get by
Cause you can’t live on love
I worked night and day to keep us going
Through the sweat and tears
Without her knowing
It was worth it just to watch her grow
Oh, oh, at least I was able to hold her
Whenever she needed my shoulder
I’m so glad I never let her go
[Repeat chorus]
Her smile got me through the years--
Dried away the tears
And filled me with hope
At night I’d lie awake and cry--
Prayed we would get by
And for the courage to cope
Oh, oh, oh
Her smile got me through the day--
And every night I’d pray
I could give her enough
[Repeat chorus (2x)]
No on can tell me I’m wrong
I ain’t going down
Cause what I believe in is so strong
No matter how long, no one
Can tell me I’m wrong--I ain’t going down
Daddy never did forgive me
I never heard from the guy again
I had to drop out of high school--
Everybody treated me so cruel
But I didn’t give in and giver her away
And every night I’d pray
I could give her enough
At night I’d lie awake and cry--
Hoping we’d get by
Cause you can’t live on love
Through the sweat and tears
Without her knowing
It was worth it just to watch her grow
Oh, oh, at least I was able to hold her
Whenever she needed my shoulder
I’m so glad I never let her go
Dried away the tears
And filled me with hope
At night I’d lie awake and cry--
Prayed we would get by
And for the courage to cope
Oh, oh, oh
And every night I’d pray
I could give her enough
I ain’t going down

I can't believe no one has written anything here! I love this song! It's an original topic (haha) and the chorus and bridge are really catchy. It still has a "love" theme, but not like between guy and girl, which is neat and unusual.
shania twain really sticks up for everyone, this song is i think about her mom having a baby when she was 15 or 16. and any other person in he rlife that got pregnat when they where young.
This is my favorite song on Up! I love the story telling, and hope to hear more of that from Shania in the future. i don't know where she got her inspiration to write the song, but it seems very realistic that it could have been a song about her mom!
i love this song soo much ♥
While I agree that it is one of the better songs on Up!, I just can't bring myself to listen to it anymore- not after both my mom and I started crying while going through the CD for the first time. That's us to a tee.
I don't know if this is right, but here is my interpretation. It's basically about someone who has a baby when the're young and they are faced with having to deal with raising the child as well as the negative reactions from the stereotypes of having a baby that young. Then she realizes how thankful she is to have her evident in the line "At least I was able to hold her whenever she needed a shoulder"
This is not about Shania's mom, Sharon. First of all, Sharon had her first child, Jill, at age 18, not age 15 like the lyrics say. Secondly, Jill's biological father didn't abandon them like the lyrics imply; he was killed in a car crash.
This song is likely about Jill. Jill left home at age 14, then gave birth to Mandy, Shania's niece, at age 15 or 16.
Neither Shania nor anyone in her family will talk publicly about why Jill left home so early. Maybe the answers are right here in this song.
