This song is about life in general. Guitarist Tony Bourge explains that "in the grip of a total eclipse, life in general. If you want to stand up in the morning and go to work and earn your money, you're gonna get taxed. Everyone's got to pay tax, everyone's got to catch a bus. You just get caught in the grip of a total eclipse." Burke Shelley commented that it was "my attempt to be political - Big Brother i.e. The Tyrefitter."
