Peculiar People Lyrics
We can fly with the wings of eagles
We can fly with the wings of eagles
We are peculiar people this I know
We can fly with the wings of eagles
We are peculiar people
We are peculiar people
We must set our hope and future to the sky
We are peculiar people
We are peculiar people
We will shed our human skin and learn to fly
With a word we can drown a mountain
With a word we can drown a mountain
Into the seas surrounding don't you know
With a word we can drown a mountain
We are peculiar people
We are peculiar people
There is more to who we are than meets the eye
We are peculiar people
We are peculiar people
And no one will convince me otherwise
We were born to, we were born to fly
You and I, we're summoned to the sky
We were born to, we were, we were born to fly
We can fly with the wings of eagles
We are peculiar people this I know
We can fly with the wings of eagles
We are peculiar people
We must set our hope and future to the sky
We are peculiar people
We are peculiar people
We will shed our human skin and learn to fly
With a word we can drown a mountain
Into the seas surrounding don't you know
With a word we can drown a mountain
We are peculiar people
There is more to who we are than meets the eye
We are peculiar people
We are peculiar people
And no one will convince me otherwise
You and I, we're summoned to the sky
We were born to, we were, we were born to fly

the bible says that as christians we are a peculiar people.
great lyrics. great live. just plain greatness.
I'm sure Meany wrote this song from a Christian perspective but I think they would prefer the song to have a universal meaning.
"We will shed our human skin and learn to fly" "You and I, we're summoned to the sky We were born to, we were, we were born to fly"
I think mute math is talking about the afterlife.
i don't think this is about the afterlife. I think "we can fly with the wings of eagles" is just metaphorical, talking about how much we as Christians can achieve. "You and I, we're summoned to the sky, we were born to, we were, we were born to fly" i think is talking about how God has called us to join Him in Heaven, and that we were born to be with Him.
Yep pretty much to all 3 of u - i think they are just saying we are all made by God and for God - to live our lives for Him so fly like eagles - free souring eagles living fully for their purposes - our purposes are to show God's love to the people around us - and worship God - He is amazing after all - He deserves it!
Hmmm, that's interesting, all four of you related it to the christian god. Personally I didn't see that at all...then again, I'm not a christian, so I don't notice bible references much. I think that it is saying that people can achieve anything, I don't think that it is limited to christians, I think that it is everyone, we as a whole, not a singular group. Similar idea though, just a slightly different view.
I totally agree with u but Mutemath is a christian band and they're most likely talking to the christian God.

that's how I view the song too I think they are saying we can achieve anything. It doesn't necessarily have to be about god. thats the beauty of music you can interpret it how you want, not exactly how the artist intends.

Thank you Jaleek. I agree. Just have a bit more to add.
I was raised Pental Coastal. So I'm pretty much brought up as a Christian. Although I lean towards agnostic more so.
Perfect example here.
So many religions could relate this song to theirs. Not just christianity.
Eagles have played huge roles in many different religions.
All the way down to Ancient Greece.
Flying as well. Especially in Ancient times. In the age of "If men were meant to fly they'd be born with wings"
Anything that flew was symbolic of a higher power. Birds would play a huge role in symbolism.
An eagle flying with a snake in its beak would symbolize a warning.
Not saying that this song isn't referring to christianity, but that it seems rather ambiguous to tell. And that many things could relate to this song. Many religions, and even outside of religion just plain people wanting to acheive greater things.
Hell even the Wright Brothers could relate to this song if they were alive. :]
Oh BTW, listen to "Walking on the Moon" by The Police. You can tell that song had a big influence on how "Peculiar People" was written.
I feel like this song really does refer to Christianity, but in a way most Christian artists don't. Flying with the wings of eagles is a reference to Isaiah, and drowning a mountain refers to the godly power we have if we believe. I truly believe that if we had faith we could order mountains to throw themselves into the sea and they would do it.
