Numbness For Sound Lyrics

A cold winter sun
My feet underground
A pale winter city
A numbness for sound
I'll wait back here

All that you notice
A moment in time
A photograph lost here
Since you were mine
I'll wait back here

Or should I
Start pushing my way back
Yeah, should I start
Pushing my way back

I walk past your room
In deep silhouette
You're tired of racing
You're down and I said
I'll wait back here

A cold end, and evening
A soaked cigarette
I'm asleep on a shoulder
That I've never met
I'll wait back here

Or should I
Start pushing my way back
Yeah, should I start
Pushing my way back

Cold, and the whiskey is wearing
And I'm on the edge of my breath
Oh, and I'm thinking of leaving
I could just lay down
Lay down and freeze to death

Hey yeah yeah
Oh, hold on
Yeah...
Hey yeah yeah
Oh, hold on

A cold winter sun
My feet underground
A pale winter city
A numbness for sound

i think it's about two people who haven't broken up yet but have grown apart. He feels cold because he remembers how much he used to love her, and now they are both tired of trying. He wonders if he should starting making an effort to get their relationship back to what it was, "should I start pushing my way back"

I think it's about trying to decide how much space and time to give someone after a fight.

I think it's about the time after a break-up. He feels desperate and everything around him is cold. He can't find his way back into his old life...

i think its about being in to deep. he's in a situation he can't get out of, and can't deside whether to deal with it, or to just forget about it and be numb.

its about the awkward couple of days after u hook up with someone that you want to start something with. sounds like she may have just gotten out of a relationship shes 'tired of racing' 'down and [UPSET]'. he obviously sees it going somewhere and is willing to wait for her but he second guesses himself like he may be passing up a better opportunity while waiting.

@tyguy7 How odd> The number on the left side was -1? What does that mean?

I believe this song is about being in a relationship with someone with a mood disorder (bi-polar perhaps?). They live together and he is having a hard time dealing with her psychological problems- he wants to run but at the same time he wants to wait it out. He's sleeping a shoulder that he's never met because he doesn't know all sides of her. When he says, "You're tired of racing You're down and I said" I think he means she is coming down from a manic episode. In the end, again, he is contemplating running away from it all. If he sticks around, he will "freeze to death" from all the coldness around him and in the relationship.

I love this song..

@Karmalife ...Great observation...I am manic and I 100% agree. GSB

I first heard this Howie Day song back in the year 2005; it gave me the chills (in an awesome way) back then, and it still does today in the year 2024 - it also makes me cry. It is one of those perfect songs - beautifully and brutally honest. I read the other comments and I am really excited to share what I think every opinion somehow missed (no disrespect intended)...I was born in Montreal, Canada, and ventured out many, many weekends to downtown bars and clubs...I am not sure what his 'feet underground" means but I am pretty certain that he is outside in the cold at one point, having a cigarette after doing a few shots of whiskey. I originally thought he wrote it in between performing on stage in a club. It also somehow makes me think of a time when I was living on the streets of Los Angeles homeless, I was in the world but not part of it and very sensitive to the sound of the traffic - I would look for places to sleep that were set off the street, hidden behind things for safety. His lyrics, are absolute poetry. Howie if you read this one day, you are seriously talented writer...the lyrics "I'm alseep on a shoulder that I've never met..."; I know exactly what you mean. I've read a lot of lyrics in 58 years of life being a huge fan of music, and one of those people who actually read the lyrics, and it's incredibly, striking, beautifully profound the way the song is written "Cold and the whiskey is wearing, and I'm on the edge of my breath..."I've never hear that expression before and it's so descriptive that I can picture you outside having a cigarette, in the cold winter where your have to keep warming your hands and you can see your breathe, maybe in the back alley of a bar or club to take a leak and have a smoke since many places don't allow smoking inside...I have been high and sad and alone many times, and the song rips into my heart in such a beautiful way. It is honestly one of the most powerful and beautiful songs (for me) that I have ever heard. And the end of the song, awesome. There is a foreign film from Quebec called "Love in the time of civil war", and the song reminds me of the tragically beautiful characters in the movie. I envy you in the kindest way...what an incredibly beautiful song; even the title is perfect. Awesome dude; beyond awesome. It's one of those songs that I would love to share with everyone I know who appreciates music, and understands how powerful it is to be broken sometimes and to allow yourself to fall apart, and even cry about it...A fan and admiring friend whom you've never met..GarySamuelBesner in what I think is some kind of unknown prison/recovery system program in Casa Grande, Arizona USA.
