Budapest Lyrics
I cannot dare to look
At exactly what you took
I give it time to breath
And wipe its tears on my sleeve
And it will break my heart
With every sound it makes on you
And it's all over dear
You squeeze my hand and I
I know it's true
His little hand round my thumb
Makes me warm and numb
I hold my breath and smile
And hope it stays for a while
And it will break my heart
With every sound it makes on you
And it's all over dear
You squeeze my hand and I
I know it's true
At exactly what you took
I give it time to breath
And wipe its tears on my sleeve
With every sound it makes on you
And it's all over dear
You squeeze my hand and I
I know it's true
Makes me warm and numb
I hold my breath and smile
And hope it stays for a while
With every sound it makes on you
And it's all over dear
You squeeze my hand and I
I know it's true

One of my personal favs, even though ive only heard a few songs from them...
Last verse;
His little hand round my thumb Makes me warm and numb I hold my breath and smile And hope it stays for a while
Only just got this album, but I think this is one of the best on there.
I think this song might be about the birth of a baby. The part where he sings "And it's all over dear" must be because she has just had the baby. This album is so beautiful.
i agree with sofia. i see the first couplet as him not being able to watch the pain of the birth, but then he gets the baby in his arms. i also assume that he calls the baby "it" because they did not find the sex of the baby out and when it was first born, they were in too much joy to notice. only at the end when they are admiring the baby does he call it a boy. one question: what does "sound it makes on you" refer to or mean?

yeah, "i give it time to breath" and "his little hand round my thumb"
dead giveaways it's about the birth of his baby.
so cute.
well it was devoted to the birth of Oscar Allen who was born during the making of the record according to Gary Lightbody in the album sleeve.
Verrrry pretty. Sad sounding, but actually a warm message of love protruding through it.
in my opinion , " i cannot dare to look , exactly what it took " means hat he cant dare to look at what this newly born child took e.g , the life of his wife maybe "every sound it makes on you ", when the child is given to its mother , and placed upon her chest "i hold my breath and smile , and hope it stays for a while " holds his breath to not cry of joy and try to smile , and hope it stays for a while , maybe the father had an experince of his children's death at birth, that's my opinion lol!
