You got your electricity
Your heat is on high
And you can't keep your eyes away from the TV
You walk outside with your face on the ground
Too tired to hear the sound of a child on the rooftops
And he was kicking off slate
Do you remember when you were a boy
And you were void of hate
Because I know a place where the smiles last for days
And the people celebrate at the drop of rain
They go outside on the barefooted ground (They last for days, they last for days)
They can hear the sound, they can hear the sound
But switch back to the first world
A smiling face on a TV
Man walks out of a square house into a square car
And he wonders what happened to me
I know I'm asking where he's going
Cause he doesn't know when he'll be back
He sits there in his car with the keys in his lap
Well have you figured it out?
Have you figured it out?
Well have you figured it out?
Have you figured it out?
Well have you figured it out?
Have you figured it out?
Cause I haven't got a clue
I was crossing the tracks I saw a big yellow light coming for me
What happened to the blinking red lights
They must have run out of batteries
And I should stand up for my friends because I believe in them
And if someone puts them down why am i silent til the end
You better smile when I say hi cause I'm smiling whenever you're near by
Well I guess you don't make a big deal out of anything anymore
And you pass a car turned over on the side of the road
You contemplate a reversal of the roles
But you don't pull over to help
You'll forget about it three seconds down the road
Well have you figured it out?
Have you figured it out?
Well have you figured it out?
Have you figured it out?
Well have you figured it out?
Have you figured it out?
Cause I haven't got a clue
And I hold everything against you
Cause, you see, you never held anything at all against me
You better smile when I say hi cause I'm smiling whenever you're near by
Well I guess you don't make a big deal out of anything anymore
And I was crossing the tracks I saw a big yellow light coming for me
What happened to the blinking red lights
They must have run out of batteries
Now you just forget about it all
Cause all your things are gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone gone
Gone gone gone
Your heat is on high
And you can't keep your eyes away from the TV

great song. i thought i knew most of the dispatch songs, so it was fun finding one i didnt know. i love the part that goes
"Have you figured it out? Cause I haven't got a clue"
idk its just so true for me
One of the most underatted dispacth spngs of all time. Only on one album and arguably there best song. About one guy killing himself
I cant quite tell what this is about.
Maybe a guy who has a not-so-great life and accidentally gets hit by a train on the tracks when the lights didnt warn him. But he's being told not to worry because his possessions in this world were insignificant?
Actually, i just re-thought it, and that's probably not it, but i wanted to spur some thought on this song finally, haha --Mark
this is gorgeous.
to me, it seems to be about taking things for granted. and not realizing what you have. and, in a way, making things more complicated than they really are (ie, do you remember when you were a boy, etc) as you get older.
the line "i should stand up for them but i am silent until the end" kind of lends itself to show that the narrator realizes that he's not doing all that he could.
i don't know. there's a lot here. i'm interseted to see what other people think, though. the song just generally seems nostalgic. and the narrator seems to be saying that everyone's giving up on everyone else too easily. persist. give people chances. no one does that anymore, maybe.
Definately one of my favorite dispatch songs. It definately made me think about the past. Stuff I could have done or said differently. It kind of gives you a different perspective on life.
in the begenning of the song the man is sitting in his car thinking of his fantasy world and then he comes back to the real plane world where he really has no reason to exist. and he ends up metiforicly crossing the tracks and getting hit by the train without warning (suicide?? maybe) i think it describes high school lol
Actually...Chad wrote this, he lived in Zimbabwe for a while, the begining of the song references his time there and the love for simplicity, and reverts 'back to the 1st world' and explains the case of many people who have a lot of things they need; i.e. electricity, heat etc. and still shows their unhappiness. Great Song!
sonicpudding has this right, its about how most of us are stuck in our little world in america with our cars, money, houses, saftey, and freedom while billions of other people are living in mud holes, starving to death, and being killed from political violence and genocide. we havent figured it out how lucky we are. we need to understand what goes on outside our first world country.
you can see a lot of the influence that Zimbabwe had on Chetro's life.. it's about the huge difference between worlds: how one is supported by friendships and appreciates every aspect of life, while the other world can sit back and enjoy the things they take for granted so much.. look at the things that are "gone" in the more fortunate world. you see friendships as the two characters are introduced, there is the working man and the young boy.. the man is tired from working, his focus is lost upon the important things of life and more on making money.. common decency of the people in the more fortunate world is lost, as he passes the car turned over he forgets about it 3 seconds down the road, where has the common decency gone in the world? it has just gone... it all builds up till he reaches the crossroads, crossroads between the two worlds and it hits him "have u figured it out" well he has. he has figured out at the climax that in our more fortunate world we have forgotten all about the less fortunate people and we make the media rule our lives. we take so much for granted and never give a second thought about our lives..... fragments are sweet. i totally just fragmented the whole time.. idk if u'll know wat i'm sayin, but this song is great and it speaks to me. DISPATCH ROCKS. haha
I loved this song the first time i heard it... I think its a man who has just kind of lost his view on life, maybe he is going through a mid life crisis/depression. He has lost sight of the child within himself. This is where i think its a little different... most of the song is his wife talking to him, trying to tell him that he is not who he used to be because he is too worried about the struggles of life. I think that this is evident in the lines... "you better smile when i say because im smiling whenever you're nearby, well i guess you dont make a big deal out of anything anymore" (he has lost his love of life). The end is her saying that all his things (his personality and interests) are gone.
Such a beautiful song
