Second Hand Faith Lyrics

I'll take my hope where I can find it
Seems I find it here in you
Hang your curtain get behind it
I won't even ask for proof
Go ahead and read my fortune
Cast your dice devine my fate
I just want to know I have one
Tell me that it's not too late for

CHORUS
A little second hand faith
A line upon my palm that I can just erase
'Cause I need to believe in a hierarchic grace
I can do without a book I'll never read
Second hand faith is all I need

I will pay you for your trouble
I will pay you for your Time
Steal my wallet charge me double
All I've come for is a sign
Is there someone who can help me
Up above the clouds I see
Sitting in a Chinese restaurant
Someone comes to offer me

CHORUS

'Cause this feeling of forgiveness means much more to me
Than that paper on the wall that cost you all of ten bucks
If an ancient word, a heathen spell can salvage me
I will believe in miracles 'cause it would take a saint to set me free

And if my luck don't last too long
Or if my life gets worse
I'll be back for another song
A blessing or a curse
And I'll never ask for refunds
'Cause I know you're not to blame
Take more blood more hair more money
I'll do anything to claim

CHORUS

What somebody threw away
May just get me through the day
I can do without a book I'll never read
Second hand faith is all I need
Second hand faith is all I need

In my opinion, she talks about going to New Age kind of people because even if she doesn't think they're genuine or that their advice is believable, at least they don't tell her that she is a bad person, should feel shame, fear, or do penance, like the officials of organized religions often would. "'Cause this feeling of forgiveness means much more to me Than that paper on the wall that cost you all of ten bucks"

"I can do without a book I'll never read" = the bible? It's about not liking the life you currently have and then hoping that a psychic or someone can tell you that there's something to look forward to

I think people need people to believe with them that there is hope

My friend brings me fortune cookies sometimes sometimes it is nice to think that I have any

I agree it's about religion, but to me it sounds more like she's so tired of being cynical that she's desperate to believe in something. Unfortunately, no matter how much she wants to, she can't bring herself to believe in anything higher than humanity. She's out of hope.

"she can't bring herself to believe in anything higher than humanity. She's out of hope. "

hope that doesn't mean humanity has no hope

You are so wrong. Yea. You're finally WRONG on a song! (And the cherry on top of the ice-cream sundae is that I just rhymed:)

I kind of agree with emmymuffin, but my interpretation is that she's going to all of these different places for "second hand faith"; trying to get her palm read, the dice cast for her, spells and blessings - just because she doesn't believe in God and the Bible. She's seeking alternative means, even if she doesn't really believe in those either.

My Interpretation

I think it's EA in all her sarcastic glory. Telling all the people shoving their religious views in her face, "Oh yeah. That's exactly what I need. To believe in something I cannot see. Cheers." It is just what I think she is saying.

My Opinion

It mentions palm reading and a curtain. It's about fortune tellers and new agers, etc. It also mentions the taking of blood and hair. Definitely not about Christianity.

FYI: You're all morons. I'll ask God for forgiveness after I stop gloating:)

I think it's talking about religion. How people will believe almost anything in order to give them something in return. It's almost like mockery with the way she "needs" second hand faith. She saying she "needs" someone to come by with a story and give her something to believe in.
