Ashes Lyrics

I've waited, and given the chance again,
I'd do it all the same, but either way
I'm always outplayed, up on your down days
I left it the right way, to start again

Chorus

Now watch me rise up and leave all the ashes you made out of me
When you said that we were wrong, life goes on, just look how long I've agreed
Now watch me rise up and leave all the ashes you made out of me
When you said that we were wrong, life goes on, just look how long I've agreed

Out of place, like a gem on a coalface
Lost on the right way, it's all the same
'Cause I've had my hopes raised, riding the wrong waves
Scared when you feel safe to start again

Chorus

Now watch me rise up and leave all the ashes you made out of me
When you said that we were wrong, life goes on, look how wrong I could be
Now watch me rise up and leave all the ashes you made out of me
When you said that we were wrong, life goes on, you blew me away

Awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
Awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
Awaaaaaaay

Chorus

I sink like a stone, I lost my control x3

I've been an Embrace fan for years... since back in the late 90s. They're KNOWN for their grandiose sing-along gospel like choruses. Anyhow... When referring to "ashes", I think he means it in the classical sense in regards to the phoenix rising from the ashes:

"Mythology. A bird in Egyptian mythology that lived in the desert for 500 years and then consumed itself by fire, later to rise renewed from its ashes."

This song is about overcoming all the shit that has happened to you. It's about being in control of yourself and letting the past simply be the past. It's about getting past all the bullshit that might drag you down. It's about emerging from a bad experience.

Embrace rocks -- i'm glad they're finally getting some recognition state-side. If you like this song, check out their debut album "The Good Will Out"... it's phenomenal.

This song is definitely about me.

When I was a kid I got messed up trying to be perfect so my parents would stay together. This may sound nuts, but many kids watching their parents' relationship disintegrate have the same idea: that it's their fault or that they can save everything somehow if they just do the right things.

Whenever I did anything 'wrong' I'd tell myself I was a bad person so I wouldn't do it again. Obviously I'd mess thing up pretty often, being human and all, so I spent a lot of time feeling bad about myself. Eventually I was ashamed to be me.

It's taken years but I now realise I was a brave, strong, kind kid then for trying to take on that responsibility. Also, I don't have to believe bad things about myself to feel virtuous, I'm good enough. Things didn't work out for my parents, but they can work out for me.

The 'you' in the song is the belief that you have to be perfect. A belief I fell in love with because it offered hope and safety but which was very harmful to me. The song for me expresses the joy of acknowledging your past and the part you played in it so that you can rise up again.

On the other hand, the song could be about you...

This is a fantastic song, it's very moving, though I don't know why. It could be because it was introduced to me by my girlfriend. It's motivating, whilst reflective upon troubles gone by.

this song is flippin good. to me it sounds like its about dying and going to heaven-" watch me rise up and leave all the ashes you made out of me"-cremation perhaps? for me, i find songs (often christian bands) to be really like, uplifting when the song breaks out into other people (perhaps a choir) singing as well. its awesome. i reckon this band is christian...

If you like songs where a choir joins in during the chorus then I recommend Rilo Kiley's 'With Arms Outstretched.' It's a beautiful song.

Wild how time flies. First comment 21 years ago - I was only nine years old then. Second comment 11 years ago. Now, in 2025, I just wanted to say thanks for the recommendation. It is indeed a beautiful song :)
