Angels

This song really is amazing... my favourite Within Temptation one. It's disappointing there's only one comment on it so far, even if that comment did involve a lovely little dance...

I don't need to say the song is beautiful, it speaks for itself. My humble interpretations of the lyics:

"Sparkling angel I believe / You were my saviour in my time of need" - She may have been going through a dark spell, in need of love, it was him who saved her

"Blinded by faith I couldn’t hear / All the whispers, the warnings so clear" - She obviously didn't know of his intentions

"I see the angels" - the angels could be his victims

"I’ll lead them to your door / there’s no escape now / No mercy no more" - No escape as they haunt him and plague him with guilt – he won’t get away with what he has done

"No remorse 'cause I still remember / The smile when you tore me apart" - Reference to when he killed her

"You took my heart" - Multiple meanings: 1. She fell in love with him, he had her heart 2. The heart is your life source, take that away and you are dead, an empty shell - reference to murder

"You broke the promise and made me realise / It was all just a lie" - Promise could have been he claimed to love her or that they would be together forever

"Sparkling angel, I couldn’t see / Your dark intentions, your feelings for me" - He didn't really love her

"Fallen angel, tell me why? / What is the reason, the thorn in your eye?" - She is asking why he killed her, what his motives were.

"Could have been forever / Now we have reached the end" - They could have been together

"This world may have failed you / It doesn’t give you reason why / You could have chosen a different path in life" - Even if he has problems or feels like the world is against him, it does not condone what he has done. The descision was his

I picture her in heaven, looking down on him and singing the song.

"This world may have failed you It doesn’t give you reason why You could have chosen a different path this doesnt sound to be like an ex-boyfriend" I disagree somewhat, that could very well apply to an abusive mate. People that do bad always find a way to shift blame, whether it be that they were abused themselves, or the whole world is against them... Murderer, abuser, really the same type of person, just varying levels of badness... Personally I think the song is about betrayal and revenge, people in many situations can relate to it. It does make sense about the spirits of other victims coming, but I get the feeling of a longer and deeper relationship between the two. Maybe that would be too dificult to convey in a short vid.

I had Within Temptation reccommended to me by a friend online, as it practically floored me listening to it. The song is just incredibly powerful, especially the line "The smile when you tore me apart", which is great for those breakups where the other person seems perfectly happy with the arrangement and they seem utterly oblivious to the pain they cause.

I LURVE this song...it was the first song of Within Temptation that I'd downloaded and I'd never heard of them before. It reminds me of a guy I still love who told me he loved me for months but after he said he loved me ran off with another girl. This song really touches the heart.

God.....This song reminds me of a recent friendship I had with a guy. He seemed so perfect, wise, beautiful. And like....I opened my very soul to him.....and he made all these promises to me......he even kissed me and showed me what I thought was love. I came to depend on him and he up and left me in the dust. Then my friend showed me this song and I ended up in tears. I felt every word of it. Especially since I have a particular love for angels.

As for the meaning: I disagree with it being about someone breaking up with you and finding out that they never loved you because of two lyrics:

"I see the angels, I'll lead them to your door, there's no escape now, no mercy no more": If this song was about being dumped, then this part would mean getting together all of the other girls that the guy betrayed to take revenge on him, which sounds like something out of some bad chick flick.

"You could have chosen a different path in life" Betraying girls isn't really a major "path" someone can take.

I think this song is about a girl who is in love with someone who has gained her trust, but the person, who is a serial killer, kills her and she finds out that he never loved her. So, she is seeking revenge on him with the other people that he killed. (It also reminds me of "The Lovely Bones" a lot.)
