Hardwire Lyrics

Giving for chances to
Leave the basement life
And not the landlord's wife.
Furnished room
Celebrate the first fly window
Bird's eye view.

You hardwire
I'll try to play the guitar.
Stay smoke is gone
Pass by the morning
Though we both see it coming
We don't run.
Let the silence settle in our bones.

You are everything you are
Nothing at all.
You are everything you are
Nothing at all.
You are every night thing
To light fame
To light the room.
... some new light on you.

Giving for chances to
Take it all in stride
Wide we walk a broken light
A minus sign.

You hardwire
I'll try to play the guitar.
Stay smoke is gone
Pass by the morning
Though we both see it coming
We don't run.
Let the silence settle in our bones.

You are everything you are
Nothing at all.
You are everything you are
Nothing at all.
You are every night thing
To light fame
To light the room.
... some new light on you.

You leave your eyes there for me to memorize.
I can see you happy in the shadows I despise.

You hardwire
I'll try to play the guitar.
You hardwire
I'll try to play the guitar.
You hardwire
I'll try to play the guitar.
You hardwire
I'll try to play the guitar.

Cover art for Hardwire lyrics by Metric

I think it's about a man who's having an affair with his landlord's wife. Even though there are other things he wants to do with his life and he'd like to move somewhere else, he can't do that without leaving the woman he loves. The affair is getting really obvious and they know they'll be discovered soon, but neither of them is willing to break it off. Even though at night she means everything to him, during the day they pretend they aren't seeing each other and so she means nothing because without her, he's completely unsatisfied with his life. In short, she won't leave her husband, and so the guy's life is going nowhere and yet he can't bring himself to leave her.

first, it's not: You are every night thing To light fame To light the room. ... some new light on you.

it's: you are every night you think to light the flame to light the room oh daylight rides a new light on you.

and this isn't: Wide we walk a broken light A minus sign.

it's: while we walk a broken line of minus signs.

why am i the only one who seems to post @ my favorite Metric songs?

U're damn right - it's also one of my favourites songs of Metric. I hardly believe it describes to love in the darkness, only those 2 lovers can understand.

These are the correct lyrics:

Giving the chances to leave the basement life, another landlord's wife, Furnished room, celebrate the first flight window bird's eye view You, hardwired, I'll try to play the guitar Stay focused on the first boring morning though we both see it coming, we don't run. Let the silence settle in our bones

You are everything you are nothing at all You are every night you fade to light the room Daylight lights(hides( a new one on you.

Giving the chances to take it all in stride while we walk a broken line, a line of signs You, hardwired, I'll try to play the guitar Stay focused on the last boring morning though we both see it coming, we don't run. Let the silent settle in our bones

You leave your eyes there for me to memorize I can see you happy in the shadows I despise

Well now that everybodys cleared that up. Any ideas on what this song means? I honestly can't come up with ANYTHING.

Well, the meaning of this song could be...

the ambivalent feeling of loving someone more than anything but at the same time detesting (his/her) escence too.

It's about quiting what makes you wrong. Like smoke. People smoke, cuz it feels good, it's something ...different. But it's bad for you. Still-you do it.

Love perhaps, the same thing.

I think the affair theory is part of it, but there's more. It sounds like it's more of a side-story to the general idea of the song. Plus, I think it's more of an unrequited love thing that an actual affair.

It seems to me like it's about how a band goes from being a shitty, inexperienced group to a good, cohesive band of skilled musicians. They want to "leave the basement life". At this point, they're still green: notice how the line is "I'll TRY to play the guitar," not "I'll play the quitar." The band isn't good yet, but they're working hard. The line: "You are everything you are/ nothing at all" seems to say that they aren't famous, therefore they are "nothing" in terms of what their goal is. They want to live the life of "furnished rooms" with a "bird's eye view." (i.e. a huge house with lots of stuff)

I think the relationship aspect is that the speaker (whom I don't think is directly Emily Haines, though it is certainly her lyrics) is in love with the landlord's wife, shown in the line:

"Giving for chances to Leave the basement life And not the landlord's wife."

The speaker wants the band to go places, but it would mean leaving the landlord's wife, whom he loves. It might not even be an affair; it sounds more to me that the speaker is simply hot for the landlord's wife, it doesn't say anything about the landlord's wife loving him back. In these lines:

"You leave your eyes there for me to memorize. I can see you happy in the shadows I despise."

It sounds like the speaker is watching the landlord's wife from a distance ("in the shadows I despise"). He wants her, but he knows he can't have her.

I love this song! :D

As mentioned below, these lyrics are not correct. I think this song falls in the line of new love turning into old love by marriage. Blindly, you fall for someone not thinking of how it will turn into comfort rather than remain lustful, so you don't see the boredom ahead of you. Hardwired to a person, or life. It's like, she's saying "Well, I'm already plugged into you and gonna be hardwired here for a while, now what? Perhaps I'll learn to play the guitar because I need to spice this up if I'm not going anywhere. Might as well." Also, it refers back to when they were happy, and how the nostalgia can be something to despise when you're dealing with the boredom...
