Candy Floss Lyrics
I'm the boy that looks excited
I'm the boy that's gonna fall apart
Candyfloss, a plot device
I'm the boy that eats his heart out
I know I should be more careful
I know I should watch where I've been
Candyfloss and she's a safecracker
She kissed me first, then broke in
We slip and slide on the stay-together landmine
I make my mind up to never be myself
And every time I make a rhyme
I live my life for someone else
She's in the kitchen with bitter diamond drunks
(She's in the way)
I'm on the sofa hoping she leaves that punk 'cause
(I'm in the way)
I'm the boy with the poetry power
I'm the boy, smells like flowers
Every time I make a rhyme
I live my life like I wasn't invited
She's in the way
I'm in the way
I'm the boy that looks excited
I'm the boy that's gonna fall apart
Candyfloss, she kissed me first
And I'm the boy, don't get me started
I know I should be more careful
I know I should watch where I've been
Candyfloss, she's a safecracker
She kissed me first, then broke in
I'm the boy that's gonna fall apart
Candyfloss, a plot device
I'm the boy that eats his heart out
I know I should watch where I've been
Candyfloss and she's a safecracker
She kissed me first, then broke in
I make my mind up to never be myself
And every time I make a rhyme
I live my life for someone else
(She's in the way)
I'm on the sofa hoping she leaves that punk 'cause
(I'm in the way)
I'm the boy, smells like flowers
Every time I make a rhyme
I live my life like I wasn't invited
I'm in the way
I'm the boy that's gonna fall apart
Candyfloss, she kissed me first
And I'm the boy, don't get me started
I know I should watch where I've been

Well, I think that it sort of has to do with one of his relationships. Some events/inside things that happened, and he puts it together in a poetic way to connect everything together.
"We slip and slide on the stay-together landmine I make my mind up to never be myself And every time I fake around I live my life for someone else"
I know that when I'm with a girl, sometimes I'll act different then who I actually am to leave a good impression. I think this relationship ended because he wasn't being himself, he was being someone else.
"I'm the boy that looks excited I'm the boy that's gonna fall apart"
Probably in reference to the sometimes over-emotional and sensitive nature of poets/artists.
"Candy floss, I lie to myself I'm the boy that eats his heart out"
Self explanatory, but I think it's easy to become delusional about the way things really are in relationships.
"Candy floss and she's a safe-cracker She kissed me first and then broke in"
He was really guarded.
"We slip and slide on the stay-together land mine I make my mind up to never be myself And every time I fake around I live my life for someone else"
Repeatedly trying to make it work with someone and wondering how long it's really going to last. He feels he can't be himself around her anymore. He probably just pretends to be happy and keeps all the dark stuff hidden.
"I'm on the sofa hoping she leaves that punk cause (I'm in the way)
I'm the boy with the poetry power I'm the boy, smells like flowers"
Seems like his former lover has found someone new and he feels he's the better man and hopes she sees that and comes around.
word wilcokid, i wish this song could be played sometimes when i'm at a party. it's that feeling when you see the girl you've always liked flirting with the biggest assholes imaginable, and you cant help but wonder what the hell she sees in them and not you.

Was your point the second definition? I've only ever known the first and kind of wondered its place in the song, though the only way, to me, that it would fit in the song is of 'that punk'.
To me the song is as exactly as it seems. I love it. It's dominated my iTunes basically because I am the Candy Floss girl.
They seriously got some lyrics wrong. It's not "fake around" or "dick around", it's every time I make a rhyme. It's clear in the song, and say at http://www.bemydemon.org/songs/candyfloss.htm which I think is the best Wilco site around.
It's "exciting" not excited. It's really deep and criticizes dudes who are like sugar. A quick high but no substance. They want to get a woman with style but no substance. The resulting relationship like so many is fighting, drunkeness, phoniness, generalized crappiness. This song can hurt so much because it tells truth about so many people's shallow relationships. If you don't go in deep you are just a superficial wimp afraid of real love and probably a user/abuser. You are not exciting, you are not a lover, you are not deep, your life and love is but a sugar high. Ouch, to learn this about yourself is tough but might make you a better person if you don't drink for four months afterwards.
