I love this song. i love the melody of the main verses, but i'm not crazy about the chorus, although i deal because it's a wonderful song regardless.
this song is basically about a girl who is oppressed-- i got the feeling the song was inspired by Tita in Like Water for Chocolate... or even the girls who are raised in polygamist colonies in Utah, but that's just me-- and wishes/attempts to escape and overcome.
i believe this song might have been inspired by oppressive societies in places like darfur, afghanistan, etc. the story itself, to me, tells of a specific young girl who's suffered tremendously but gathered enough bravery within herself--despite the pain of recalling those memories--to speak publicly about her adversities, resulting in public knowledge and rescue efforts to help other girls.

oh and isn't it interesting that such melancholy lyrics are backed up by an uplifting beat. it's almost disguised, veiled.

In a sense she is calling the girl Bravebird because she has maintained strength, persisted and overcome, inspite of her hardships and that's something worth celebrating.
The use of an uplifting beat makes the song inspiring, which is what it should be, to send a message that is positive.
