Tomorrow On The Runway Lyrics

Old days, don't come to find me
The sun is just about to climb up over there
While my heart is sinking I do not want my voice
To go out into the air

Did you leave the darkness without me?
You're always miles ahead
And you're standing in tomorrow on the runway

Oh, be the music in my head
The air around my bed
Oh, be my rest
Replace the small disgraces of the times and places
That I never really left

Did you leave the darkness without me?
You're always miles ahead
And you're standing in tomorrow on the runway

Oh, I want to fly, fly forward into the light
Be alive, to come alive
On the leaf-bright Friday drive
Sudden horses at the red light
Turn around, see clearer ways to go now

"Oh be the music in my head, the air around my bed, oh be my rest. Replace the small disgraces of the times and places that I never really left. Did you leave the darkness without me?"

-- such wonderful use of words. obviously about a lost love; she's sung it with an exceptional feel into it. heavily recommended=)

i think she's saying she wants God to be her rest, etc., but if that's true, then i don't understand, "did you leave the darkness without me?" because there it sounds like she's talking about someone in her past or something.

Personally I think its about someone leaving a partner in a relationship to reach their goals, "And you're standing in tomorrow on the runway" is the big break, "Oh I want to fly, fly forward into the light" and the person left now realizes he was left and he wants to be a success too!

the way i see it, it's basically about being stuck in the past and wanting an escape. i love this song so much. her voice is so pleasant.

Reminds me of my youth (my dark, depressed "goth" days) and companions who shared that same dark mental place with me...then one of them would break free of the depression and move on (or escape by suicide) leaving me feeling left behind. Of course those days are over now, but if I could write a song about it, this would be it..... as always innocence mission writes in half-memory (reminds me of S&G's dangling conversation) and the importance is how we remember feeling rather than what happened to make us feel that way

You got it. Exactly. That's on of the keys to the genius in all their songs.

I always thought this song was about a search for Jesus. Sometimes we may feel like we're alone in this sad kind of world, and we're just crying out for God's love. Then we gradually see God's love everywhere. However, I personally think of this song when I think about past relationships. I sort of had to stop listening to it because I related it with separation and loneliness. I love the line about coming alive on the "leaf-bright Friday night." It reminds me of the going out with friends or romantic interests on the weekends. A little bit of high school in there, I guess.

@aubreymcfate i love love love the innocence mission but i have to be honest, i cant stand religion. ugh. luckily, this particular song seems to be about a past relationship as you said, and not about jesus. i take tomorrow on the runway to mean already far ahead and about to get further away.

It's absolutely beautiful and breaks my heart. What darkness did the other person leave though?
