Atlantis is the ultimate counterculture song.That famous line"And,as the elders of our time choose to remain blind,let us rejoice,and dance and sing and ring in the new,Hail Atlantis" Our elders were conducting a terrible war in Vietnam.Students were battling cops on campuses.The Panthers were fighting for their survival.Nixon was waging a war against the New Left and the hippies.So the song Atlantis was a metaphor for the new world we were going to create. Thats how I saw the song then and still see it today.

I think they killed him actually. Crazy that they came up with this song to go with that scene - I can't imagine coming up with that combo, but it actually worked very well in the movie - awesome scene.

Atlantis is a metaphor for the peak of the sixties, when it seemed a new world was being created, a good world. Some people describe that time in history as having brief flashes of utopia, which ultimately ended up disappearing, but it's influence still lies heavily on the world today: an Atlantis if you will.
I think the feeling in this song is also characterized by the Stephen King book Hearts in Atlantis, and a passage in a book by Hunter S. Thompson. It goes:
...the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. This song reminds me of that song in "this is spinal tap" about stonehenge. hahaha, my brother used to always skip over this when we listened to the cd, but one day I forced him to let us hear it. I just, I can't really take it seriously....that intro is just...heheheh. I need to see that movie again.
