Atlantis Lyrics

The continent of Atlantis was an island
which lay before the great flood
in the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean.
So great an area of land, that from her western shores
those beautiful sailors journeyed
to the South and the North Americas with ease,
in their ships with painted sails.

To the East Africa was a neighbour, across a short strait of sea miles.
The great Egyptian age is but a remnant of The Atlantian culture.
The antediluvian kings colonised the world
All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas
In all legends from all lands were from fair Atlantis.
Knowing her fate, Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the Earth.
On board were the Twelve:
The poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist,
The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends.
Though Gods they were -
And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind
Let us rejoice and let us sing and dance and ring in the new
Hail Atlantis!
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
I wanna see you some day
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
My antediluvian baby,
My antediluvian baby, I love you, girl,
Girl, I wanna see you some day.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah
I wanna see you some day, oh
My antediluvian baby.
My antediluvian baby, I wanna see you
My antediluvian baby, gotta tell me where she gone
I wanna see you some day
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, oh yeah
Oh glub glub, down down, yeah
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah yeah yeah

Atlantis is the ultimate counterculture song. That famous line"And,as the elders of our time choose to remain blind, let us rejoice, and dance and sing and ring in the new,Hail Atlantis" Our elders were conducting a terrible war in Vietnam.Students were battling cops on campuses. The Panthers were fighting for their survival.Nixon was waging a war against the New Left and the hippies. So the song Atlantis was a metaphor for the new world we were going to create. Thats how I saw the song then and still see it today.

this song always makes me think of the scene in Goodfellas when they beat the shit out of Billy Bats

I think they killed him actually. Crazy that they came up with this song to go with that scene - I can't imagine coming up with that combo, but it actually worked very well in the movie - awesome scene.

Atlantis is a metaphor for the peak of the sixties, when it seemed a new world was being created, a good world. Some people describe that time in history as having brief flashes of utopia, which ultimately ended up disappearing, but it's influence still lies heavily on the world today: an Atlantis if you will.

I think the feeling in this song is also characterized by the Stephen King book Hearts in Atlantis, and a passage in a book by Hunter S. Thompson. It goes:

...the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. But no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. There was madness in any direction, at any hour. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was the handle - -that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

Brilliant ! So great to find articulate commentary in the wasteland of SongMeanings!

Had enough of incoherent superficial interpretations yet ? The thing of it is - Haight Ashbury went from "flower power" Summer-of-Love into speed freaks and Hell's Angels preying on teenage runaways very quickly...

I'm not sure but it seems he's looking for the girl of his dreams and will only find her under the ocean with Atlantis. Maybe not, but this is song is still brilliant.

This song reminds me of that song in "this is spinal tap" about stonehenge. hahaha, my brother used to always skip over this when we listened to the cd, but one day I forced him to let us hear it. I just, I can't really take it seriously....that intro is just...heheheh. I need to see that movie again.
