Honestly. I think he is telling it how it is. And they don't necessarily have to be drinking. The whole part about breaking the law is when they throw their cans out, as in littering.

I personally think it's about doing what you feel inclined to do at this exact moment. And thoughts cross your mind of acting immature, but it doesnt matter.

everytime i hear it, i always assume that he's talkin about a booze cruise. just drivin around randomly and drinking. sounds terrible, maybe stupid, but we do it a lot at my high school cause there aint shit to do. its just matches perfectly, windows down, throwin the cans out, breaking at a stop sign, racing down a road. it came on one time during a boooze cruise and i just kinda stopped and thought...wow. the first verse at least, maybe second verse about stopping by the beach and wading. maybe smoking some reefer and tryin to be quiet but they're coughing too much and they act older than they are. then just lookin out on the water and thinking. when theyre talking in the beach he finally kisses this girl and he can't stop thinking about her for days, then she comes and he moves in with her?

Also breaking the law by not stopping. I thought it ment 'brake' a couple more, as in slow down. But it says 'break' as in break a couple more laws, so maybe they are drinking aswell?

i can't believe there are not more posts about this song. it is absolutely fabulous.

i think that he's just writing about being young, and in love and living in the moment. "we cough too much now, but we're too young for ourselves." in that moment, the consequences of their actions didn't even matter. for once they could just do what they wanted to do without worrying about the future.
