Wrote For Luck Lyrics
I wrote for luck
They sent me you
I sent for juice
You give me poison
I order a line
You form a queue
You try something hard
There's nothing else you can do
Well that much
I've been trained
I can sit and stand
And beg and rollover
And I don't read
I just guess
There's more than one sign
But its getting less
And you were wet
But you're getting drier
You used to speak the truth
But now you lair
You used to speak the truth
But now you clever
And wrote for luck
They sent me you
I sent for juice
You give me poison
I order a line
You form a queue
Try something hard
There's nothing else you can do
And you were wet
But you're getting drier
You used to speak the truth
But now you clever
You used to speak the truth
But now you clever
And when its hot
You start to melt
'cause you're not made of jinn
You're made of chocolate
And when it cold
You tend to crack
You keep on piling out
Not putting back
They sent me you
I sent for juice
You give me poison
I order a line
You form a queue
You try something hard
There's nothing else you can do
Well that much
I've been trained
I can sit and stand
And beg and rollover
And I don't read
I just guess
There's more than one sign
But its getting less
And you were wet
But you're getting drier
You used to speak the truth
But now you lair
You used to speak the truth
But now you clever
They sent me you
I sent for juice
You give me poison
I order a line
You form a queue
Try something hard
There's nothing else you can do
And you were wet
But you're getting drier
You used to speak the truth
But now you clever
You used to speak the truth
But now you clever
You start to melt
'cause you're not made of jinn
You're made of chocolate
And when it cold
You tend to crack
You keep on piling out
Not putting back

This tune has some quite obvious meanings and some quite obscure ideas
fuck knows what the first two lines mean
'i sent for juice you give me poison' he is in a club tripping on pills as the video clearly shows. i sent for juice (from the bar) you give me poison (booze)#
i hold the line (at the bar) you form a queue (get the drinks) try anything hard (hard drugs) is there anything else you can do? (hard drugs)
you were wet (sweating your tits off on the old dids)
u used to speak the truth but now your clever (you used to chat shit when off your head, like me, but now your educated and i can no longer relate)
ill continue this later mateees
14 Years old when I first heard this song in 1988 and my take on it, if you listen to the lyric:
you were wet but you're getting dryer now, you used to speak the truth but now you're clever, you used to speak the truth but now you're liar.
To me, this meant you're naive but you're learning.
Looking at the other comments it's easy to see that people can relate with their own interpretation of the lyrics and sound of the Mondays,
I think it's about him realising what the dark side of the music industry is about and how they get you in this lifestyle and have you surrounded by people that don't really have your best interests at heart.
You were wet, but now you're drier. The money they throw at you. If you have lots of money you are 'liquid' but then they have you, they have sold you the dream . But then they say that there isn't enough money etc.
I always guessed it was an idiot drug dealer or something "I order a line, you form a queue" as in a line of cocaine, but the dealer is an idiot so he forms a queue. I don't know, at least I commented on this class song.
Its very flow of consciousness lyrics really, but its one thing, then the opposite, and sometimes cleverly worked. "You used to speak the truth but now you're clever"
All the lyrics are obscured brilliantly by Martin Hannett, contrasting with John Cales sometimes grating production of Squirrel & G-Man.
I always thought this was about Tony Wilson
These lyrics are inaccurate- it's "I hold the line"- like a soldier on the front line, dig? He's holding the line, everybody else just queues up. It's also "start to crack" not turn to crack. I'm assuming "now you lair" is a typo of "now you're a liar." Don't think it's "made of king" either, but I don't know for sure 'cause Shaun's a genius but he's also a fookin mushmouth of a singer... still, ya gotta love 'em.
GOD, this is his greatest example of songwriting, really is.
the 'made of king line' should be 'made of gene'
