Jeff Martin said when he covered this in a concert he did in Australia: what ever one is his live solo CD; that he wrote it when they were reefing it up in the Rockies in Western Canada and he saw crazy things in the shadows of the mountains.

Gives me the impression of someone that is feeling a bit lost in life (or love or both?). They are contemplating it all in a quite mystical / philosophical manner. Where to next? Is there hope to return to what was before?

I love the poetry of the lyrics and the imagery it creates for me.

@Chewch comment really ties together the mystical themes of the song for me too.
