Master Plan Lyrics
I've got a master plan babe,
I been workin on it from the start.
Pluggin in all of the numbers, watchin it on all of the charts.
Just cause it starts off slow babe,
Doesn't mean it don't have a heart.
You'll be walkin round showin off someday
And it'll take you right back to the start.
It's everything that you want babe.
It's everything that you need.
Soft and warm al the time, make you want it over and over.
Strong on the horizon,
But ends up bein really so sweet... oh so sweet.
Sometimes I wanna lay down babe.
Sometimes I wanna stand up and fight.
Sometimes it runs its course in a day.
Sometimes it goes for night after night.
Know that it will start off strong babe,
And it will end up weak in the end.
Just like the heart you break of a love babe,
Just like the hand you take of a friend.
It's everything that you want babe.
It's everything that you need.
Soft and warm all the time, make you want it over and over.
Strong on the horizon,
But ends up bein really so sweet... oh so sweet...
I been workin on it from the start.
Pluggin in all of the numbers, watchin it on all of the charts.

In my opinion the best song off of It Still Moves. My Morning JAcket are creating irresistable epic recordings and Masterplan is one of those, such that it would not be out of place on the band's masterpiece - Z.
Absolutely love this song....the acoustic version off the Rolling Stone Live EP is breathtaking as well. Not entirely sure what it's about. At face value it appears to be about sex, but I think that might be too simplistic an explanation. Incredible, beautiful song whatever it is about.
Master plan to me... means the desire to find the love of you're life and realizing what comes with it, nobody's perfect... maybe not just one person.. but like the hand you take of a friend... It's hinting towards some kind of dreamy relationship.. something two people can live their life for... don't miss you're chance, babe...
Great Song
love this song... I think it's about a kind of run-of-the-mill relationship that he's in, and how it seems kind of mundane, but he really wants to knock the chick's socks off. like "know that it will start off strong babe, and it will end up weak in the end" -- they both see where it's going, but there is always opportunities to change the course of it all...even if it's a routine, it's sweet. "strong on the horizon, but it ends up being really so sweet" like yeah, we'll have our lulls, it might be boring sometimes, but i want to grow old with you. stick with it, you'll see.
just my interpretation, can't make up my mind i guess. maybe i'm over-romanticizing it :P
To me, this song is pure sex. I think he is singing to someone who he would like to....... It is amazing. This just happens to be my crazy opinion. I think of one person when I hear this song. He knows who he is.
I also happen to love "Golden" and "Rolling Back". They are pretty quiet and cerebral (at least they get into MY dense brain and make me think a bit). They are lovely tunes. Jim James is very unique. I think what MMJ is doing is very different from many bands right now.
Check out his "Rocket Man" (Elton John) and "Suspicious Minds" (Elvis), too. Really great covers, in my opinion.
This is a good song and there are certainly sexual references, but (and I could be wrong here) I'm thinking this may be a follow-up to 'Golden.' Some parts sound like relational stress that could result from the tension of a long distance relationship, like that James would have with his lady while on tour. I think this particularly because of the phrases that contradict themselves and the following: "Know that it will start off strong babe, And it will end up weak in the end. Just like the heart you break of a love babe, Just like the hand you take of a friend." In other words, their relationship starts strong then weakens over time and she breaks his heart by seeking the comfort of a (male) friend; Just my opinion, I welcome criticism.
To me, this song is about ecstasy. When Jim talks about having a "Master Plan", confidently plugging in numbers, planning out a course of action, he sees no way he could ever fall back down to the normalcy where he started off before the drug, (but he brings that up later). The chorus definitely confirms it for me, though, especially the way it suddenly rushes in with a heavy riff and flow (much like a roll):
"It's everything that you want babe. It's everything that you need. Soft and warm al the time, make you want it over and over. Strong on the horizon, But ends up bein really so sweet... oh so sweet."
Although all signs in the chorus pointed me to thinking it was about x, the biggest line that did was, "Soft and warm all the time, make you want it over and over"
Jim James voice is pure honey. The song is all about sex and seduction, both aurally and lyrically..”Soft and warm all the time, make you want it over and over”
