Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode cover) Lyrics

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there
Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer
Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess

I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus

Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer

I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver
Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Reach out and touch faith

this might sound weird but i like the marilyn manson version the most.

I think this song is quite literal. Not about drug dealers. It's about the exploitation of the vulnerable by televangelists."Pick up the receiver,I'll make you a believer."It's the incessant telemarketing by evangelists to become the "personal Jesus" of people they hope to suck money out of.

Cash's Version is better than the Depeche mode and Manson versions. To me, it's about being a goodfriend, who always listens and wants to help, but it's almost in a sinister tone in this song and maybe slightly sarcastic, fan-fucking-tastic none the less

I havent been into cash real long and I was surprised to know he covered depeche mode and NIN instead of vice versa

Yeah, this is a clever one. Whilst the original version is all about compassion and support, no matter what, this one sounds almost like a personal devil is making the same offer: but in this case, the offer to hear your prayers is more a sort of coaxing, the kind of offer where you buy now, pay later. The line about "Flesh and bone by the telephone. Lift up the receiver I'll make you a believer." doesn't sound so much to be support, but almost like "you're only human, temptation will win...so here's the offer...call me when you want it. MWO HA HAHAHAHAA!" Or that could just be me.

@BBDemus It's not just you--I was thinking the same thing.
