It's not a big mystery, its about wanting that unatainable beauty and never quite getting it... On one hand, he wants it, but the desire is to real, too physical. For him, he can not attain this beauty, but, perhaps it is a blessing in disguise, maybe attaining it doesn't really get you anywhere in the end anyways.
The moral: Better to find one love, than to waste your time pining over superficial beauty.
One question. What Ira sings between second and third strophes? I just can´t understand those lines.

felt the need to comment after reading serpentinepad's comment: you speak in past tense but really this song was recorded about ten years before those you mentioned and probably ten years before you heard it, too. bandwagon douche.
Actually, "We're and American Band" is on I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, which came out 3 years before this album. Yes, "Pass the Hatchet" came out 10 years later, but all serpentinepad was commenting on was the evolution of YLT's sound. They use heavy feedback on lots of songs, from the day they started continuing on today, and sometimes it gets pretty wild, but that's why we like YLT, isn't it? Don't criticize someone for knowing "nothing" when you don't have your facts straight.

Personally, I like the distortion on this song, but it does get a little much for some people's ears. I had a friend's parent actually tell me to "turn down the heavy metal" once while we were listening to this song. Ridiculous.
I also agree with herminio on the line between 2nd and 3rd strophes. As least the "...swingers on the move" sounds right

Beauty so out of your league that you won't even try, just try to find solace in contemplation; and perhaps delude yourself calling their attitude 'lurid', 'cause they revolt you... yeah, they sure do revolt your hormones. ;)

I couldnt agree more. People typically read song lyrics, and try to decode everything into some symbol or metaphor for a thing going on in pop culture or society. I totally dont have anything against the first poster at all; seems like a smart person. But thats just the kind of response Im reffering to. It just seems over- analytical. I believe this song, like Prometeo said, is just about feeling so so insecure about relationships and whos doing what. Heck, even just insecurity about what the opposite sex...

This song is so good up until the final guitar feedback. It's too fucked up I think. They were brilliant at it on "We're an American band" but they perfected it with "Pass the Hatchet". Still a great song though
imo, a song that reflects alot of American culture. we want desired objects so badly that when we get them they still seem unatainable or distant(?) we crave for our desires, not fufilling them
