Love and Peace or Else Lyrics
Lay down
Lay down
Lay your sweet lovely on the ground
Lay your love on the track
We’re gonna break the monster’s back
Yes we are…
Lay down your treasure
Lay it down now brother
You don’t have time
For a jealous lover
As you enter this life
I pray you depart
With a wrinkled face
And a brand new heart
I don’t know if I can take it
I’m not easy on my knees
Here’s my heart you can break it
I need some release, release, release
We need
Love and peace
Love and peace
Lay down
Lay down your guns
All your daughters of Zion
All your Abraham sons
I don’t know if I can make it
I’m not easy on my knees
Here’s my heart and you can break it
I need some release, release, release
We need
Love and peace
Love and peace
Baby don’t fight
We can talk this thing through
It’s not a big problem
It’s just me and you
You can call or I’ll phone
The TV is still on
But the sound is turned down
And the troops on the ground
Are about to dig in
And I wonder where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Love and peace
Lay down
Lay your sweet lovely on the ground
Lay your love on the track
We’re gonna break the monster’s back
Yes we are…
Lay down your treasure
Lay it down now brother
You don’t have time
For a jealous lover
I pray you depart

It's got to be about the situation in the middle East, the Israel/Palestine thing.
"Lay down your guns All your daughters of Zion All your Abraham sons" Stop the fighting in Israel. I'm Jewish, and often in services Israel is referred to as Zion. Israel is even called Zion in the Israeli national anthem.
Totally, the break in the middle "and the troops on the ground are about to dig in, I wonder where is the love", this is definitely about the Israeli Palestinian conflict, and as you mentioned the reference to Abraham, the Father of all the tribes (Jews and Muslims) & Zion, the term for the spiritual Israel

are you kidding me BonoisGod and xinnieful. I think this song is frickin sweet!
After reading the lyrics and listening to this song i am convinced that it is definitely about God and the state of the world. The first verse i believe is about repenting and laying your sins down to God. He says lay down your love, your sinful emotions(jealosy), and treasure to Him, and it will break the Devils back. He continues on about praying for people and hoping that by the time they reach the end of their life they have lived long and happy and leave this temporary world with a new heart. Then i believe when Bono says I DONT KNOW IF I CAN MAKE IT, IM NOT EASY ON MY KNEES, he is saying that its a tough thing to do for live for Christ but its something hes willing to do. HERES MY HEART YOU CAN BREAK IT.
That song reminds me a lot of Mofo, though it's much better.
Probably my favourite from the album. I love the lyrics: "As you enter this life I pray you depart With a wrinkled face And a brand new heart" Prolly meaning, that he prays the person will die of old age and having lived a full life and not due to some war.Pretty obvious I guess...
Also love the way he sings "Lay your love on the track We’re gonna break the monster’s back"
It's definately about Middle East peace, at least on some level. The: "Lay down your guns All your daughters of Zion All your Abraham sons" point seems pretty clear at that.
this is the ONE song on the album that i still can't listen to. i just can't get into it no matter how hard i try... or don't try. and doesn't this seem very repetitive of yahweh (or visa versa) : Here’s my heart you can break it
I think this song indicates the struggles and wars in the world. Specially in the middle east. Bono is searching for peace and prays to the people to put down their weapons. He prays that people should live their entire life and live it peacefully.

"Lay down...all your Abraham sons"
Well Abraham sacrificed his son to God, according to the scriptures. He lay him down, so to speak, on an altar because God told him to kill him but then just as he was about to do it God said stop, I see you have faith in me, you need to go no farther. So basically what this line is saying is that if God tells you to commit murder for him, go ahead and do it. Never mind that in the story of Abraham God stepped in and stopped the murder from occurring. This is kind of a pointless sentiment as what is the point of sacrificing something if you know God is going to stop you. The point of that story had meaning for the time but is completely irrelevant now. It's like an old trick. You can't fool someone twice, unless they are completely oblivious.
I would just like to add that I think it's very stupid to put the line "Lay down...all your Abraham sons" in a song about peace. Lots of people who kill believe they are doing God's will which is a problem. The story about Abraham wasn't about God sanctifying murder but as I said in the above post, it was about God testing Abraham's faith and it was the kind of thing God could only get away with pulling once because anyone who had faith in him would know that he 1. It's a sin to kill and 2. God stopped Abraham so he must not really want anyone to kill in his name anyway.
To sum up, I wonder if u2 are really sincere anymore or if they're just spouting stuff from the Bible.
