This is my absoloute favorite JM song as of yet. I love the line "I can't be sure that this state of mind is not of my own design." Maybe some deep hurt has made him keep himself a little distant for fear of being hurt again. I love the way that he shows that you can have everything you want outside of yourself, but if you are not happy with you, all of the material things don't matter. And it's just like JM to lighten the mood a little with the line about the batteries at the end.
I love this song so much... I just kind of stumbling on to John Mayer a couple of weeks ago, and I fell in love! Anyway, to me this song questions the usual ideas of happiness. It's like he is saying that even though he has all of these material things, plus family and friends, there is still something missing. Have you ever felt like you were missing the one thing that would make you complete? I think thats what is he is trying to say... and until he figures out what it is, then he is gonna be feeling lost in a way, and kind of out of place.
The way i feel about this song is that he is missing the girl that he lost. The one that got away. He's talking about loneliness and a test for it, even though in his checklist he has opposite sex. He could either have another girlfriend, who doesnt really emotionally mean anything to him, or he could just have friends of the opposite sex, which would mean he is missing the realationship part of life. So to me thats whats missing, and im not sure if its not there at all or he is with someone who means nothing to him and is just there passing the time.
I seriously think that without John Mayer my life would be incomplete. I rely on him to get me through every different aspect and obstacle of my life. His music is inspirational and absolutely purifying. This song is one that i can really relate to but then again i think just about everybody can. there is always something that might feel empty or incomplete, and sometimes you find it, other times you dont. I cant find mine right now so i guess ill keep looking...

I think he is talking about no matter how good things are in your life (money, check... opposite sex, check) and no matter how self-reliant a person is, there is a moment when none of it is has meaning. There is something more that a person needs and many times we can't even answer that question of what is missing.

I believe those lyrics mean that for some, Autumn (colder weather) comes without asking you if you are ready. You only know when it starts when there is fog inside the glass around your summer hearts, your summer hearts are warm thoughts so the glass gets fogged up on the inside, just like in your car when its cold outside and warm and moist inside.
I get the impression that this is one of those revealing songs ... not just a hypothetical situation and can provide a real glimpse into JM. I have my own idea what it means.

I realize this idea may be unpopular (although I don't know how or why it's become that way in society today), but the song mentions he is lonely for somebody, but he has all the friends in the world (and in fact I'm sure he does - who couldn't love JM) so who could that be ... all you're left with is the one individual who is...

I mean JM mentions all the things people typically have in order to feel fulfilled, except for one major thing: religion. There's a investigative method where you make a list of typical causes and cross off the one's you've tested ... and yet religion is the one thing he seems to have left off his list to start with.
Why that is is intriguing ... maybe because he's been so frankly face to face with his own mortality, such an experience tends to have a polarizing effect, and he's likely surrounded by a crowd who fairly treat this subject with contempt, perhaps it's only natural that he not consider the one thing most likely missing from his life and most likely to make one feel lonely.
