Body Below Lyrics
There's a story i could tell
When the cold wind starts to blow
Like a whisper in the night
From a friend that you know
It says "keep holding on
To my body below
Forsake me not,
Don't ever leave me alone"
There was a time when the sun
Gave it's life to the trees
And the air it smelled sweeter
For the honey and the bees
The ocean rolled salty
And wild and free
The fruit swelled and ripened
And burst with their seeds
But what starts with desire
Can turn into need
The chest gets all tight
Like it's got some disease
What burns in the fire
Just ends up as coals
What floats on the water
Can sink like a stone
Now i want to believe
Every word that you say
I want you to need me
To not go away
Have trust in the nighttime
And faith in the day
To walk on the water
Be never afraid
Can you bear it upon you?
My love has gone under
Above all the stars
Have forgotten to glow
But if you keep holding on to
My body below you
I'll warm you and keep you
From feeling alone
Warm you and keep you from feeling alone (x5)
When the cold wind starts to blow
Like a whisper in the night
From a friend that you know
To my body below
Forsake me not,
Don't ever leave me alone"
Gave it's life to the trees
And the air it smelled sweeter
For the honey and the bees
And wild and free
The fruit swelled and ripened
And burst with their seeds
Can turn into need
The chest gets all tight
Like it's got some disease
Just ends up as coals
What floats on the water
Can sink like a stone
Every word that you say
I want you to need me
To not go away
And faith in the day
To walk on the water
Be never afraid
My love has gone under
Above all the stars
Have forgotten to glow
My body below you
I'll warm you and keep you
From feeling alone

This song hits me pretty hard. I find that a lot of things that I really have trouble expressing, she gets across so deftly and effortlessly. I think that the cold wind of the second line refers to the narrator's lover's loss of sexual interest. Those words whispered, so to speak, the familiar voice, the insidious self-doubt, the desperate irrational loneliness. The next two verses, the sun gives it's love freely, and fills the world with light, feeding life, unselfishly. It's an appeal, of sorts, however unfair it may be. "what starts as desire can turn into need..." and when that desire is unrequited by a lover victim to the cold wind, so to speak, that tightchested pain. Then, the doubt, the smoldering, smokey miasma of self-consciousness.
I really want to go line by line and praise her clarity, but I'd be doing it for hours.
@gbedlam can you go line by line? Im having trobles understanding all of the song. Im doing this for a school project but im really having a hard time trying to get whats she really saying.
