I think it's about looking at the natural world and finding beauty in it that can help us get through our hardest times. That time persists, good things happen, bad things happen, and the most we can do is hold hope that time and nature will be kind to us.
I just saw Mark Kozelek at the MFA in Boston and he said this song was written after September 11th. He said everyone was writing songs after it happened, and he was to nervous to tell anyone until just recently.
These lyrics are increadible. Even more so after finding out he wrote it about September 11. "souls escape fire, they rise higher"
