My First Kiss at the Public Execution Lyrics
The carnival's glossy ghosts
zebra-painted horses parade
the cotton candy prostitutes
caramel apple corpses singing:
"Just this way to the neon orange gallows!
Tonight we tie the noose around the killer's collar!
Watch him play his wind pipe organ!"
Just five dollars to see a face explode, to see a man strung up by his throat.
Come one! Come all!
If you look close enough
you'll see death's machinery exposed.
So won't you hold me closer
just one more minute
until the executions over?
just one more minute
Won't you behead another
c'mon we're waiting
won't you shock and entertain us?
The hangman selling tickets to the sparkling death scene.
Tonight we watch the rope choke a conscience clean.
See it up close, see it in person!
His lips spun like revolving fun house doors as the hush kisses at our neck nape.
"Any final words for your loving audience?"
says the man with the dazzling sapphire cape.
So won't you hold me closer
just one more minute
until the executions over?
just one more minute
Won't you behead another
c'mon we're waiting
Won't you shock and entertain us? [x2]
Until the end of the world?
Snap, snap, snap goes the neck.
"Rah, rah, rah!" the audience.
Black, black, black goes his face.
The sky spreads like thighs inside lace. [x2]

there is something i've been thinking about, when i hear this song..The part when B.B. sing:So won't you hold me closer just one more minute until the executions over? just one more minute Won't you behead another , when they sing the phrase "wont you behead another" it is as if they really sing:wont you be a better lover?.. has anybody else thought about it? they write something, but sing it so it has to meanings..................
This song puts some messed up pictures in your head. Especially the whole "Any final words for your loving audience" part. Carnies are weird folk.
Anyways, it's obviously about a sideshow where they kill people infront of an audience. And how the people watching love it.
to add on what tsucol said, i think it goes a step further. i dont know if im making this up, but a while back i heard a group proposing to make executions Pay-per-view. I think Theyre playing on this notion and taking it a step further, to a society where executions are a daily event, an event you would take a date to. (or maybe refering to colonial/medeval era, when public executions were a common place?
this song is about how people percieve death so facinating, from the death penalty to murder to other incidents where people lose their lives. and how media, whether small town or bigger, make such a deal out of it. at least, that's what i think.
agrees with sixuntilsundown, good job.
not so much about the meaning of the song, but every time i hear this song it reminds me of a warzone. the bass just sounds like bombs constantly exploding, the guitar sounds like squealing scrambled frequency, and that melodic scream just sends shivers down my spine. i love how this song sounds.
i ment Two meanings
They do put a play on words often to give it two sounds. It's hard to get the right one sometimes. The meaning has already been stated. This song is exhilirating.. Just like shfiftyfive said it's just got so much power in the sound.
Yeah, just adding to what's already been said. Another song that builds on the album's theme of life being so inundated in television and what that says about humanity. These days we're mixing the emotion of love and the voyeuristic perversion of watching someone die.
This song also reminds me of how, if anyone's seen verdict rulings on court T.V., how anymore there's always big crowds outside to cheer on the harshest ruling. In such cases like. The Lacey Peterson one...There are so many victims...Her and her unborn child..as well as her family..and even his family..No one wins, even with him being set to be put to death. But when they ruled it out that way the crowd outside was elated, and cheering .This is a common scene anymore when I watch Court T.V. I know this song isn't directly about this, but it reminded me of it haha. It's not like we have actual public executions in our modern world..or America anyway.
