Son of a Widow

I agree with everything on the board, but I had a sort of 'revelation' about that the last line of the song.

"The son of the widow you raised from the dead - where did his soul go when he died again?"

Pre-Christ (according to Christian theology) souls went to a place called Sheol, where they waited until Christ came for them. Then, when He died, He went to Sheol and those that believed in Him went to Heaven while those that didn't went to Hell-just like we as living people do. Therefore, the soul of the boy that Jesus Christ ressurected came back from Sheol when he was ressurected. By asking where the boy's soul went when he died again, what's really being asked is if (after having an experience like that) if the kid followed Christ.

I don't know if that was really obvious and everyone knew it, but it's not on this board so I thought I'd say it anyway.

"Grape on the vine, Why not be crushed to make wine?" this line is awesome. it makes me realize that pain is sometimes necesary in life to make something wonderful and be changed into something better.

This is what i get from the song

"I'll ring your doorbell until You let me in and I can no longer tell where 'you' end and 'I' begin"

He's talking about communicating with Jesus and having such a close relationship with him that he can no longer tell where he ends and God begins. Or at least he's talking about his desire to be that way

"Grape on the vine, we've been alone a long time. Grape on the vine why not be crushed to make wine?"

Here he's talking about being with Jesus. Jesus being the vine and we are the grapes. The fruit on the vine, and he's talking about the process of being changed by Jesus. When he's talking about being crushed into wine he's talking about being changed by Christ.

"Pay no attention to me dancing with my girl - with every intention to be failures in this world"

I don't really get this one exactly. Maybe just a reference to his attachments to worldly things

"Six of my closest friends will dig up the ground, all my accomplishments gently lowered down."

Here he's talking about the futility of living your life for yourself. When he dies all his accomplishments will be buried with him so what value are they? It also kind of adds a theme to the song, in the beginning he's talking about his closeness to God, then the line about his girl and now about his death. Which brings us to the last line

"The son of the widow you raised from the dead - where did his soul go when he died again?"

This is referring to when Jesus raised a person from the dead in Luke 7:12. You would think that someone who met Jesus would forever be changed and committed to him for the rest of their life. Let alone someone who was raised from the dead by him!

But Aaron is asking where he went when he died, because in this story the character (maybe Aaron) was once so close to God that he couldn't tell where he began and God ended but even with that past he can still fall away from God.

And the repeating of grape on the vine is talking about how we must continually come back to God. One big event won't change our lives forever, it's a relationship. and this goes back to the "I'll knock on your door until you let me in." We must continually knock and search after God.

"all is the same to the souls of those so much resigned" This is the one line i don't understand mostly because of the phrase "of those so much resigned." I understand how he's using the phrase but I don't actually know what the phrase means :(

agreed. my favorite off the new album. i wish they wouldve added another acoustic song though, that really brought out the variety of the band.

I've thought about this line for a while and have come to no good conclusions as to what this means... any ideas?

I saw mewithoutYou last night (it was so great) and they closed their set with this song and before they played it, Aaron said it was about the old testament & dying but coming back to life. That's the meaning...straight from the source.

they closed with this song when i saw them as well.

even though that might be the realy meaning of this song, to me it reminds me of accepting everything has an end and no use regretting over things you have done, becuase you can always get something better.
