Four Word Letter (Pt. Two) Lyrics
I wrote a four word letter,
Post-script in crooked lines,
"Though I'd lived I'd never been alive."
And you know who I am
You held my hem
As I traveled blind
Listening to the whispering in my ear,
Soft but getting stronger.
Telling me the only purpose of my being here
Is to stay a bit longer.
? a bicycle chain,
As the handlebars crashed to the ground,
The back wheel detached from the frame,
It kept rolling yeah,
But aimlessly drifting around
Oh Doubters,
Lets go down
Lets go down
Won't you come on down?
Oh Doubters
Lets go down
Down to the river to pray
"But I'm so small I can barely be seen
how can this great love be inside of me?"
Look at your eyes
they're small in size
but they see enormous things
Wearing black canvas slippers
And our frog-on-a-lily-pad pose
We sewed buttons and zippers
To Chinese pink silk and olive night clothes
If you can someday stop by
Somehow we'll show you the pictures
And fix you some tea
See, my dad's getting a bit older now
And just imaginably lonely
Oh pretender
Lets go down
Lets go down
Won't you come on down?
Oh pretender
Lets go down
Down to the river and pray
"Oh but I'm so afraid
I'm set in my ways"
But he'll make the rabbits and rocks sing his praise
"Oh but I'm too tired
I won't last long"
No he'll use the weak to overcome the strong
Oh Amanda
Lets go down
Lets go down
Won't you come on down?
Mama, Nana
Lets go down
Down in the dirt
By the river to pray
A wick to fit the wax
Wood to fit the wire
You strike the match
Why not be utterly changed to fire?
And sacrifice the shadow in the mist
Of a brief life you never much liked son
If you'd care to come along
We're gonna curb all our never-ending,
clever complaining
And who's ever heard of a singer criticized by his song?
We hunger,
Though all that we eat brings us little relief
We don't know quite what else to do
We have all our beliefs
But we don't want our beliefs
God of peace,
We want you.

WE HAVE ALL OUR BELIEFS BUT WE DONT WANT OUR BELIEFS, GOD OF PEACE WE WANT YOU! amen to that. the lyrics on this song are amazing
This song seems to me like a depiction of different people and their excuses/problems with God. The first verse mentions "...as the handle bars crash to the ground. The back wheel detached from the frame, it kept rollin' yeah, but aimlessly drifting around" This would be the people who believe God set the world in motion and then sits back and watches, much like winding a clock. Thus the "Oh, Doubters..."
The second verse is a bit harder for me to understand, but it seems like the people who use Christianity as a mask "...Somehow we'll show you the pictures and fix you some tea" and its getting harder and harder to keep the show going. Thus the "Oh, Pretenders..."
The last part just seems like a call for people to let go and just trust in God without holding back, doubting or pretending.
P.S. does anybody ever get tired of looking through posts to hear other peoples interpretations, but all you see is personal comments about their favorite band or a certain line they liked or how good the band is live. Thats all well and good, but its not the reason for this site.
Thank you. It's killing me, as well. Thank you for your interpretation!

Just a personal belief seeing as how down in the dirt the first album was and how Aaron seemed when he wrote it and four word letter part 1, I would say the correct and in mind four word letter for that song would be 'i love you goodbye'. Plus if you put it post script of 'though i'd lived i hadnt been alive' it kind of rhymes also or at least flows um... nicely. however in the newer album the songs are much more uplifting and hopeful and as his meaning for things change i believe the intended words changed for part two.
though i'd lived i hadn't been alive i love you, goodbye
however after reading the lyrics again for this one i think the same four word letter may have been used for both songs. and know there are songs on this album like untie me it would make sense for the lyrics to be either. but when you look at the first stanza
As the handlebars crashed to the ground, The back wheel detached from the frame, It kept rolling yeah, But aimlessly drifting around
if you bare with me for a moment and look at the lyrics and read the lyrics and picture aaron as the back wheel then he did leave, he said goodbye to the frame and started drifting around aimlessly in life. the back wheel could represent a number of people or himself. it simply seems hes talking about himself in the entire first stanza, so if you agree with that then youd agree he did say goodbye and started drifting around and in turn the four word letter could very well be 'i love you, goodbye.'
^_^ i hope i confused the crap outta you.
no, but really, i hope i made some sense. some...
best song on the new cd the rest are amazing too but this is probally one of the top 5 songs i've ever heard....ever love, chad
The Cry of the Exodus by Scotty Kruger is incredible, as is the rest of this song.
yes it is amazing
I can't get over how amazing this band is. Just reading their lyrics. Wow. AMAZING. So great..... so...... great........ ordered the new CD today (a little late but.. woo.. pumped)
i love this song its so great! he talks about all the excuses people give to not serve God and not follow him. Its a challenge to just come to God, give up the excusesand worries and find comfort in who God is. and Amanda is Aaron's significant other...or at least she was for a while, i believe they were engaged for a time but im not sure about things now.
Defintely about making excuses. However, we learn how are excuses are pathetic as he has a rational response to prove that all of our excuses that we use to not serve God whole heartedly are all pathetic. God sacrificed all for us!! We should be willing to do the same. NO EXCUSES. no limits. "He uses the weak to overcome the strong" amen.
