Quiet Lyrics
Baby says I can't come with him
And I had read all of this in his eyes
Long before he even said so
Why go, I asked?
You know, and I know why
And it'll be just as quiet when I leave
As it was when I first got here
I don't expect anything
Take care
I've been hurt before
Too much time spent on closing doors
You may hate me, but I'll remember to love you
Goodbye
Don't cry
You know why
And it'll be just as quiet when I leave
As it was when I first got here
I don't expect anything
All the waves of blame arrange as broken scenery
As they steal your best memories away
What if I was someone different in your only history?
Would you feel the same
As I walk out the door
Never to see your face again
And it'll be just as quiet when I leave
As it was when I first got here
It'll be just as quiet when I leave
As it was when I first got here
I don't expect anything to change when I leave
And I had read all of this in his eyes
Long before he even said so
Why go, I asked?
You know, and I know why
And it'll be just as quiet when I leave
As it was when I first got here
I don't expect anything
I've been hurt before
Too much time spent on closing doors
You may hate me, but I'll remember to love you
Goodbye
Don't cry
You know why
And it'll be just as quiet when I leave
As it was when I first got here
I don't expect anything
As they steal your best memories away
What if I was someone different in your only history?
Would you feel the same
As I walk out the door
Never to see your face again
As it was when I first got here
It'll be just as quiet when I leave
As it was when I first got here
I don't expect anything to change when I leave

she couldnt get to him...she spent all her time trying to get inside of him, to understand him, to have him trust her, and let her in on his deepest and darkest secrets...but she never got anywhere. her absence isn't going to affect him either way. he'll only care that he's not with somebody...it doesnt matter that he's not with her anymore.
I think this is hands-down one of Rachael's best. This song is stunningly beautiful and equally as tragic. To me, it is about someone choosing something in their life - something negative - over you, when you have been there through thick and thin, but now at the end you realize there was NOTHING you could do to change them, they will continue on a self-destructive path "It'll be just as quiet when I leave, as it was when I first got here".
Also, for me, the bridge of this song is beyond heartbreaking and so profoundly tragic it takes my breath away. The almost mumbled, hurried words leading up to "would you feel the same, as I walk out the door... never to see your face again, no, never to see your face again.."
Gorgeous and a true testament to Rachael as well as a treasure to modern music.
it's about loving unconditionally even though you know that they will not love you back
Rachael Yamagata said in an interview that "Quiet" was one of the hardest songs to record because she was so emotional. She said it was about wondering whether you made any impact on someone, if they'd miss you when you were gone.
this is about how you now that someone is gonna break up with you even before they say so. It's that sweet feeling you want to hold on to just a little longer before it all be gone. Sometimes you happen to care so much for someone only to find out you never really meant anything for them. and so nothing changes when you leave...somehow yamagata manages to sing right into my soul triggering feelings i thought i had locked away safely.
I came upon this song by chance, surfing the music store on iTunes. It is one of the songs that, no matter how many times you hear it, it's like listening to it for the first time! Every time I play it, I find myself wrought with emotion! It's so, so woefully, beautiful.
I agree with the previous posts; the song is about the realization that your relationship is over. And everything will go back to the same as if you were never there. There is no expectation of reconciliation, or making amends; only quiet loneliness…
Everyone has put it well, especially Sonsglow. Heartbreakingly beautiful.
i'm a radiohead/coldplay/NiN sorta guy but after listening to this piece by Rachael Yamagata, i'll be sure to pick up her album next time i'm at the store. anybody knows what it means?
that is exactly what i thought, yeahyouknowme. great analogy.
anyway, this is a very well written and emotional song. rachael yamagata is just completely stunning and powerful. i think that she has seriously mad talent. i would be lying if i said i wasn't completely in love with her and her album. even as a guy, i feel the emotion and the depth of her lyrics in this song. quiet is simply perfect and beautifully written. it's good to know that in the end of a bad breakup that rachael can write such a great song out of her pain and emptyness. she's a goddess.
i love this song. its like mellow-emo
