Roof With a Hole Lyrics
And only an outline still remains
Cause the roof's got a hole in it
And everything's been ruined by the rain
There may be diamons in that dream on the hill
But the people who live there still complain
Cause the roof's got a hole in it
And everything is soaking in the rain
No one can practice the common sense that they see
Through the nickle and diming I'll explain
When the roof's got a hole in it
Everything gets ruined by the rain
My head's got a hole in it
And everything's been ruined by the rain
To me, Roof with a Hole is about people in general. Sometimes people have a tendancy to lose their sense of self, either through relationships, or through any natural event. Hence, a roof with a hole, is about your sense of self, and the rain coming in is whatever issues or problems you are trying to deal with at the time. When you have a "roof with a hole" the problems seep in and wash away your sense of self. The second verse applies to trying to get people to realize that it happens to everyone, not just people who have nothing. You could be rich beyond your wildest dreams and still lose your sense of self. Hence, "there may be diamonds in that dream on the hill". The third verse is about, how difficult it is to get a grip of reality and common sense once those problems are coming through and washing away who you once knew to be you. The song is meant to put to words those feelings, thoughts, and sensations.
I find it particularly interesting, given his eighties' lyrical obsession with arizona drought.
acid
Acid indeed. the colors are flowing from the wall to the floor. that happens to me everytime I.....
poverty mentality?
At first like sid, and ER, I thought acid, but as I looked deeper into the song tj's explanation fits well. Acid only explains a small bit of the song. I now think the rain in the song is washing away the paint in the house onto the floor. Great song, meat puppets are great.
roof with a hole in it, the hole could be anything but for now let's say it's heartbreak.
His heart is broken and he is just a shadow of his former self. There could be diamonds on the hill(other girls, pros of being single, etc) but he can't see that cause his heart is broken. It's common sense what he should do, he could probably even tell someone else in the situation what to do, but it's never so obvious when it's you.
The lyrics aren't the most amazing thing ever, but I LOVE this song!!!
