i think this song is about the band's attitude to their live show. the "inspiration isn't cheap these days you better make them earn it" means that there telling theirselves to play their asses off to make the crowd leave with something special.
Yeah, to me this means the way the band/Sonny perform...if you verse by verse it makes sense...
