We Are Lyrics

See the devil on the doorstep now (my oh my)
Telling everybody, oh, just how to live their lives
Sliding down the information highway
Buying in just like a bunch of fools
Time is ticking and we can't go back (my oh my)

What about the world today
What about the place that we call home
We've never been so many
And we've never been so alone

Keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands you come out clean
But fail to recognize the enemies within
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are, we are

One step forward making two steps back (my oh my)
Riding piggy on the bad boys back for life
Lining up for the grand illusion
No answers for no questions asked
Lining up for the execution
Without knowing why

Keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands you come out clean
But fail to recognise the enemies within
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are, we are

It's all about power by taking control
Breaking the will
And breaking the soul
They suck us dry till there's nothing left
My oh my, my oh my

What about the world today
What about the place that we call home
We' ve never been so many
Yet we've never been so alone....

So alone

Keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands you come out clean
But fail to recognise the enemies within
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are, we are

It's all about power by taking control (we are)
Breaking the rule (we are, we are)
And breaking the soul (we are)
They suck us dry till there's nothing left (we are, we are)
My oh my, my oh my

We are
We are (its all )
We are
We are, we are (by taking control)
We are
We are
It's all about power
By taking control

I believe this song is about moral and environmental issues. We blame the government or other people for extreme poverty, forrests being destroyed and global warming but as the lyrics state, "We are" responsible; for every action, there is ALWAYS a consequence. The devil sitting on the "picket fence" is our moral conscience leading us to bad decisions and it is this that we are constantly fighting against within ourselves. I love how simple but effective the lyrics are.

Basically, what I am trying to say is that we often blame our problems on someone else but "We are" responsible and that is the truth.

My Interpretation

You're the fifth commenter so far to "hit the nail on the head" when it comes to the meaning of this song. :)

I like this song, but I've never seen the movie. To me, this song is about personal responsibility and how our society blames our problems and circumstances on anyone beside whose fault it really is -- ourselves.

"Devil on the doorstep" is saying the devil is closer than we think; "fail to recognize the enemies within" is saying that, actually, the devil, (or the source of our problems), is within us.

In the song, the devil (us) is sitting on the picket fence advising people to blame others and advocates living a life of gaining "power" and "control", and shunning responsibily. Most people "riding piggy on the bad boys back for life", or are just going along with what the devil says, but the singer, is one that sees through and is telling the devil, "no, you are wrong, we ARE responsible".

I think the message is until we learn to take resonsibility for our circumstances, then we are on a collision course with loneliness, unhappiness, soulessness, or whatever.

"They suck us dry (We are, we are) 'Til there’s nothing left" -- guess this is the key, this is a protest song against a consumerist world, where we lose our precious time with stupid activities, without interaction, only looking for our own comfort ..

I think you hit it on the head.

'So alone', yet there's the need to scream out rather than shy away. I understand that feeling.. I adore these lyrics, and the melody / her voice all fit together amazingly well!

It applies to me as a High School song--kids these days (and yeah, I'm one of 'em).

We've never been so many but we've never been so alone.

Everybody's got their own problems that they couldn't expect anyone else to understand, and admittedly, they probably wouldn't. Or wouldn't know how to cope with them the way we do.

One step forward makin' two steps back. Now isn't that so. . .right? Try to get somewhere and you end up gettin' nowhere. And counts for nothing. I've got a lot to say about this song, but I'll keep it for another time.

Put your hands in your own bossom: "you say we're not responsible, but we are". Hands up for any one who isn't helping his neighbour...

keep watchin' from you picket fence...well to me that is like some people will just sit through people's problems and blame it all on them when they dont even know what its like because they are sheltered...but one thing i dont get because it could be taken two ways is "you say we're not responsible, but we are..." is that like "oh well this happened to you because you arent a responsible person" or is it more of a "dont blame yourself because youre not responsible(or accountable,it wasnt your fault, etc) for what happened" ? maybe im thinking to hard...

well i really love this song!!!

"Sliding down the information highway"

This line, anyway, is mentioning the internet.
