I wanna say it's about the matrix .. but .. that sounds dumb.
to me it seems like he singing about in the north (of britan presumably) there are many people who are ignorant and violent.
When the singer returns to the north he realises this fact and gets in a fight.
"you know the numbers" could be a reference to these people only picking fights when they have superior numbers. or it could be about 'knowing the score'
anyway the singer no longer feels like they belong or can relate to the people in the north
I took it as an anthem, showing pride of Northern England, because that's where the band is from.
In interviews they go on saying how much they miss their home while touring, but wanting to get out after.
"Show me the knuckles" basically means they're willing to put up a fight to people who don't like this pride.
In the end though, they wanna be home in the North.
You're right freelance. I read an interview/biography kind of thing and it said it was about returning home and realising its not like you always remember becasue you hav seen so much more to life when travelling.

It's about a place in England where the music come from called Leeds (or near there). The place is pretty much deprived I think the "you see the numbers" is a reference too the motorway signs you have on the way there Or, as was said, the weekend culture they have, of getting pissed after football matches and fighting with rival football fans
Also it's him saying that although his old friends are like that, he doesn't want a part of it. He's changed and moved on, and when he goes back home he just wants to relax not get involved with aggro

As for the song I love it, I still can't decide whether he's defending the north, or saying that he doesn't like it anymore.
I think it's more of a criticism, personally. That us Northerners tend to be more conservative ie close-minded, loud-mouthed idiots (it's probably just because they know more Northerners, growing up in Leeds) and have deduced the majority as just that; but in actual fact, it's really not restricted to the North at all.

"You know the numbers" to me, means the population size of these idiots, as in, "you know the amount". I reckon the "show me your knuckles" line is about aggression on the part of these close-minded thugs, certainly when they're criticised, as The Music are doing here....

MocoMan, shut your fucking mouth. All they're trying to do is interpret the song and it looks like they did a damn good job. If your from England (which is what I can assume because you act like you know everything about it), your only proving the "stereotypes" that they were talking about. Seeing how most Americans, are immigrants from Europe anyway, hence why the east coast is much more developed than anywhere else. And why you have so many British place-names in your country. So the American Revolution was basically Europeans(with a large percentage of Brits) fighting Britain.
