I Like The Way Lyrics

Somewhere inside my evolution
Karmically I seek retribution
Looking for love in physical beauty
Desire is the drug of the bourgeoisie
And now I try to intellectualize
Like a glimmer of good in a bad man's eyes
I am consumed by the flesh haunting me
I know temptation taunts the empty

So pour yourself over me
Until there's nothing left to see
Because I like the way you move in the dark
I like the tension, the tension and the spark

The decadence of giving in to desire
Creates such entropy within
Looking for love in spiritual faces
Blind to the art of fabrication
I'm like a baby sucking mamma's milk
Wanna drink my fill and then some
Leave me alone
I always thought I was better than this
But temptation tempts the temptee

So pour yourself over me
Until there's nothing left to see
Oh, because I like the way you move in the dark
And I like the tension, the tension and the spark
Oh, because I like the way you move in the dark
You know, I like the tension, the tension and the tension and the spark

This physicality
Shifting me chemically
Such power over me
It's just desire
I know it's trickery
I know it's just skin deep
I know I should resist
I'm just too tired
Too tired

There's just one thing missing
One thing missing here is love

I like the way you move in the dark
I like the tension, the tension and the spark
(So pour yourself over me)
Ooh you know I like the way you move in the dark
(So pour yourself over me)
Ooh you know I like the tension, the tension and the tension and the spark

So pour yourself over me, yeah yeah yeah
Until there's nothing left to see, yeah yeah
There's just one thing missing
One thing missing

There's just one thing missing
Oh the one thing missing here is love

Sexual song about desire. You want a really loving relationship but you are continually tempted by the sexual aspect of it rather than what you truly want.

This is my favorite song on the album , and this is what Darren said about the lyrics : "It’s really a song about sexuality. It’s about being aware of the physical aspect of attraction as opposed to the spiritual connection of love.. and yet still being a slave to desire. In terms of my views on spirituality and eastern philosophy I am fascinated by the concept of stages of evolution of the ego and the soul. "

At first it fascinated me the resemblance I found in this song with his previous SG work (the background sound, the open talking about sexuality again)...then I discovered that it was really deep, and it portrays the search of a guy for something fulfilling...but still getting caught in senseless relationship that lead him nowhere. A-m-a-z-i-n-g way of approaching the topic, I felt drawn in that state of mind when this album was released, September '04. This sums it up: "There's just one thing missing One thing missing here is love" Sexy and so meaningful at the same time. The work of a genious.

This song is one of the best on TATS. I love the overt sexual overtones and the sensuality of the song as well. I adore how he is so open about speaking of such a purly physical relationship, because we all know that many relationships have no love, as he mentions. Pure desire. Just a very sexy song which always gives me chills.

It gives me chills as well..."pour yourself over me..." wow. I also love that this is the song where the album title comes from :)

You may have heard people speak about the split between the intellectual part of their brains/themselves and the emotional part. The intellectual part is the more rational, logical, lucid part of themselves while the emotional is the heart, the feelings, the sentimental. Some may label it the "bad," illogical and/or irrational side, but I don't necessarily believe that to be true. I think that either could be considered "bad," unhealthy, illogical, or irrational if you are invested fully or mostly in one side or the other, with one side influencing your actions, decisions, etc. It's all about balance between the two.

Having said all that (I hope I'm making sense!), I believe that Darren may be saying one of two things. The song is essentially about a disconnect, giving in to desire in an unhealthy way, and prioritzing and/or being driven by the emotional rather than a balance of it and the intellectual. So when he says, "And now I try to intellectualize," he could mean that he knows this is wrong and he is trying to communicate it to himself and others as an intellectualized process in an attempt to avoid judgment, persecution, facing the reality of the situation, etc.

Or he could be trying to intellecuatlize what is going on in an attempt to see the reality of the situation, get some control over the emtional side, and set himself on the right path. And that is the "glimmer of hope" in the "bad man's eyes."

That's just how I understand it anyway. (:

I loved this song from the first moment I heard The Tension and The Spark, but when I heard him perform this acoustically at an in-store... WHOA. Just hearing it bare and raw like that gave me the absolute chills. Darren is such a brilliant songwriter and performer.
