To return, to the cold
It isn't much fun, to touch the trees
No one has known
Go rest your head
'cause you can't miss this
Poor boy
Became
A slave
To use
Now despair, moves in so close
Too many years, free at last
He didn't know
So learn to speak
He clears his throat
'cause you cant miss this
Poor boy
Became
A slave
To use
So rebuild
What's left
Of this child
So weak
Sorry
Changes
Trample
The plan
Dead stars
Phantoms
Once more
Keep on burning through that noose
Keep on burning through that noose
Keep on burning through that noose
Keep on burning through that noose
Keep on...
Poor boy
Became
A slave
To use
So rebuild
What's left
Of this child
So weak
To return, to the cold
It isn't much, but I'm free at last
It isn't much fun, to touch the trees
No one has known
Go rest your head
'cause you can't miss this
Became
A slave
To use
Too many years, free at last
He didn't know
So learn to speak
He clears his throat
'cause you cant miss this
Became
A slave
To use
What's left
Of this child
So weak
Changes
Trample
The plan
Phantoms
Once more
Keep on burning through that noose
Keep on burning through that noose
Keep on burning through that noose
Keep on burning through that noose
Keep on...
Poor boy
Became
A slave
To use
What's left
Of this child
So weak
It isn't much, but I'm free at last

this song is just moving, so melodic. love all the voicework. i still say it's about American soldiers in some way, but it has a very general meaning.
I very much like this song. As whiteout said it is so melodic; it isn't precisely the song to mosh around with.... I believe the song is about reviving one's hidden monsters and facing them. Like a teenager who was opressed seriously and kept it all inside blocking it. Eventually those things come back and hit hard. It appears that the conflict had a positive ending: "I’m free at last"...
To me this song is easy, and it can be taken 2 ways.
First, it can be said to be about slavery in the 1800's; as is evident with the images of "burning through the noose" "touch the trrees no one has known", "it isn't much, but i'm free at last"
to me the song is speaking about how even after slaves tried to get free, and were freed in the south, they still were'nt treated as humans, and being forced to work as indentured servants, etc, therefore; "to return to the cold"
or, the 2nd way, as malvenko said, it could be more allegorically, as in being a slave to an addiction, as the lines"rebuild/what's left of this child/so weak". It's about constantly struggling with quitting an addiction, and winning, but it still feels like an empty victory because the addiction has ruined your life. my 2 cents.
The innocent and abused free and enlightenend. Opressors are being condemned. Opresors enlightened let go of it and return to the cold alone and new
I wonder who he is singing about...
Chevelle is such a wonderful band.
Its "to Return, to the cove" not cold
think its cold...?does sound like cove. lyrics say cold, but those guys"""such tricksters. tried to save the "child", too weak the child was and was lost. Now the "cold" or the love loss is whats left. War over.."now free at last". Some one else to come for him-the next him. this song is about suicide, or an attempt
I think this song is about a kid who was used by other people by picking on him "poor boy became a slave to use" and he tries to commit suicide but some things get in the way "Sorry changes trample the plan""Keep on burning though the noose" but finally he commits suicide "but i'm free at last" kind of a sad song but it's reality.
I like some of your views.
This song to me is this:
The Return is strictly meaning returning to the world after a spiritual journey. You see, some of us feel so much pain that we die and are re-born again so many times.
"To return, to the cold It isn’t much fun, to touch the trees No one has known Go rest your head Cause you cant miss this "
The spirit and the physical self can be in two places at once at times. And the spirit is used to flying. When it returns... when you do, you fall down to the trees and feel the coldness of this world again.
"Poor boy Became A slave, to you"
Right now in this society, just short of those few that have broken out (I'm on my way out), everyone is a slave to another. Keep that in mind.
"Now despair, moves in so close Too many years, free at last He didn’t know So learn to speak He cleans his sword Cause you cant miss this"
Too many years confined, he finally has broken out. Remember the rule: What happens spiritually, happens physically. It's just a matter of time.
So now he is ready for battle. He forgot how to talk the way he really talks. He is rusty.
I think this section hints at the need for someone to take time to rest themselves before jumping so much into the affairs. So please all of you on this journey, take time to yourselves. You couldn't reach this point without God... and you still need God. Only more then ever.
I know you want to prove yourselves, but only when you reach that point, even if it's for a second, where you surrender yourself completely, can God go into you and empower you.
Give God a second... that's all she/he needs.
i agree with pondca; that its about slavery.
