Spidersong Lyrics
no more promises
i have made them before
and broken them
give me the go ahead
and i'll undress myself for you
if you're at all interested
i'm growing legs
i am the spider
crawl inside her
oh i know your pain
you're like i
are plagued by the flies
inside your brain
i'm creeping up your veins
are you smart enough
and small enough to play this game
i'm growing legs
i am the spider
crawl inside her
i better watch my back around you
you've got the moves, the shoes
the doo, you've got me
i want you to know i want to
you've got those tired eyes
all the time
you need someone to bring you to bed
i'm growing legs
i am the spider
crawl inside her
i am cool
too cool to call you
far too stoned
to leave my bed
i'll write this song
to win your kiss
but stay asleep instead
i have made them before
and broken them
give me the go ahead
and i'll undress myself for you
if you're at all interested
i am the spider
crawl inside her
you're like i
are plagued by the flies
inside your brain

I think its like...they are just playing games with each other, pretending not really to know. she wants to be with him in a loving way ("you've got those tired eyes, all the time, you need someone to bring you to bed), but he wants something more carnal. he doesnt really care enough to put forth an effort with the female so he figures he will write her a song(since thats what is good at) to make her stick around, and feel somewhat appreciated. But he doesnt appreciate her at all, he is under her skin, and she cant let go even though its not right. thats my take on it.
Sex
My favorite song from the new album.
max is showing the stages he grows through when trying to meet/seduce a woman. 1.)and i'll undress myself for you if you're at all interested -he comes on strong and shows his initial interest right away. 2.)oh i know your pain you're like i are plagued by the flies -he then empathizes with the girl and attempts to show her that he is very similar to her, so she feels understood, which is what everyone wants 3.)i better watch my back around you you've got the moves, the shoes the doo, you've got me he then basically praises them and adds to their confidence that he really does want them, even if his intentions are darker than what he insinuates. 4.)i am cool too cool to call you far too stoned to leave my bed -and the last verse shows two sides to max. he either attempts to make the girl want him more by saying, i am too cool to call you etc, or he just gives up and realizes that its not all worth it, and just moves on to the next girl realizing that he could have that one, but decides not to for lack of interest/connection/motivation etc;
what about the fact that the song is called spider song. and spiders typically do what? weave webs,... and also? the male will have sex with a female and then get his head eaten off. So max weaves his web, gets the girl, butwants nothing more to do with her to eliminate the chance of getting hurt(head eaten/broken up with in a relationship/fear of commitment). simple-yet true read my comment on belt and you'll understand why
@santeria122232 I know this is LITERALLY a decade later, but I happen to just be reading this now, and I thought I'd add a point to your comment, which I thought was pretty insightful, if I do say so myself. I think another comment Max was trying to make, whether it was intentional or not, about "being" a spider, is that they're parasites. (When threatened) they'll inject you with venom (poison? IDK for sure...), leaving their prey with a "present" so to speak that remains with them after the spider is gone, while the spider can go on living their lives...
IDK for sure...), leaving their prey with a "present" so to speak that remains with them after the spider is gone, while the spider can go on living their lives freely and without anything to tie it to the spider. I also think that what they catch in their webs, they eat, again like predators with prey. So I the overarching point I'm making is that he's not necessarily writing from the viewpoint of the other person being an equal/peer, AKA another spider, but COULD be writing from the viewpoint of a predator, an enemy, the one with the upper hand and more power and control over the situation and over the other person. He's very likely seeing himself as almost evil, or at least negatively viewing himself, in comparison to whomever he'd be sleeping with, and I definitely believe that this is something that should be considered equally or, rather, at the same time as your point. Both I think are ultimately valid and compelling, and I think they all stem from the same concept. I really like what you were saying, Santeria, and I think they both are true in equal measures. Yes, they kinda countermand each other, but it's not impossible that both are what he intended/meant. Okay, I'm done. Sorry for the novella. I'm avoiding taking an online exam for my college course, so I think I subconsciously was doing just that for as long as possible. Anyway, I'll bug off now. Thanks for reading!
Well, I was pretty sure this song is about sex ("Crawl inside her?"), although in an alternate version of the song on a previous cd the last part is extended with "I am too afraid to dig/date you, I can't find a word to speak. If I could, I'd talk so good that you would be with me." Which could imply a more intimate feeling than just sex. Also if you look at Max's interview he had "unrequited love" for someone in high school. But he also said he slept around a lot. I dunno.
I see it as the narrator using the woman for sex. Catching her in his web, using her for what he wants but having no emotional attachment to her whatsoever. He is completely aware of what he is doing and he is also aware that she wants something more but he just doesn't care. He'd rather keep it carnal.
I think the line "you've got those tired eyes all the time" relates to how emotionally worn out she is but his solution is to bed her rather than stop.
I guess the basis of the song is that if you're looking for something to take away your loneliness of being single, then sleeping around is only going to fill that void for a short period of time before you feel it again.
now that i think about it, maybe max does write about sex a lot...
i really wish members would put the lyrics up as they appear in the album leaf. these aren't right at all and it's bothersome.
^they're the lyrics from the original spidersong.
