American Dream Lyrics
All work no play may have made Jack a dull boy
But all work no God has left Jack with a lost soul
But he's moving on full steam
He's chasing the American dream
And he's gonna give his family the finer things
Not this time son I've no time to waste
Maybe tomorrow we'll have time to play
And then he slips into his new BMW
And drives farther and farther and farther away
So He works all day and tries to sleep at night
He says things will get better;
Better in time
And he works and he builds with his own two hands
And he pours all he has in a castle made with sand
But the wind and the rain are comin' crashing in
Time will tell just how long his kingdom stands
His kingdom stands
His American Dream is beginning to seem
More and more like a nightmare
With every passing day
"Daddy, can you come to my game?"
"Oh Baby, please don't work late."
Another wasted weekend
And they are slipping away
'Cause he works all day and lies awake at night
He tells them things will get better
It'll just take a little more time
He used to say, "Whoever dies with the most toys wins"
But if he loses his soul, what has he gained in the end
I'll take a shack on the rock
Over a castle in the sand
Now he works all day and cries alone at night
It's not getting any better
Looks like he's running out of time
'Cause he worked and he built with his own two hands
And he poured all he had in a castle made with sand
But the wind and the rain are coming crashing in
Time will tell just how long his kingdom stands
His kingdom stands
All they really wanted was You
All they really wanted was You
All they really wanted was You
But all work no God has left Jack with a lost soul
But he's moving on full steam
He's chasing the American dream
And he's gonna give his family the finer things
Maybe tomorrow we'll have time to play
And then he slips into his new BMW
And drives farther and farther and farther away
He says things will get better;
Better in time
And he pours all he has in a castle made with sand
But the wind and the rain are comin' crashing in
Time will tell just how long his kingdom stands
His kingdom stands
More and more like a nightmare
With every passing day

your right about the parable but it rlly hits home with me cause it reminds me of my dad and his drug dealing so we could have the finer things.he now sees that his castle made of sand was comin crashin down and is now clean and im glad to get to do stuff together cause hes not always messin with drugs.kinda depressed tho cause hunting season just ended and thats when we spend the most time together
i love the mood of this song, especially at the beginning, it's so easy to get stuck in your head!
This song talks about family, and how important your family can be. It also kind of says that managing a life like that needs help from God.
This song reminds me of Jesus' parable of building on the rock and not the sand.
Amazing song!
i love this song, especially the chorus. like stevodrummer sed, it always gets stuck in my head. ill b somewhere and randomly start humming this song. it ROX! it also gets across a rly important message to ppl.
This song is just amazing. Like everyone said, it is really easy to get stuck in your head. I love the comparisons in it. It's just brilliant. "And he works and he builds with his own two hands And he pours all he has in a castle made with sand But the wind and the rain are comin' crashing in Time will tell just how long his kingdom stands His kingdom stands." That is the most amazing lyric. The meaning behind it is wonderful.
I most agree with Pueri Deo this song too reminds me of the Parable who builds his house on the sand but the rain and wind come and destroys it but when it is built on the rock he is kept safe.
the rock symbolizing God.
"I'll take a shack on the rock Over a castle in the sand"
oh i love that part... i would so rather have God then everything else in the world
I feel like this often. Stress over time is like water that flows into the cracks of rocks and splits them. Its a slow process but, if we allow ourselves to be complacent, the world is more than ready to blow us over. I think i can attribute one overall message of this album, is that it is a much needed call to the church to stop wading in waters of the world, and move on to the river of life. If we don't walk out of the desert, we'll be claimed by it.
