Number Five with a Bullet Lyrics

We're gonna die like this you know,
Miserable and old...
Really gotta hand it to you,
Really gotta hand it to you
Are you positive? Absolutely sure?
Well just get dressed, don't do this,
Just get dressed, don't do this

You spent the night lit listening to Miles Davis
Said it makes you wanna fall in love
Or be smart enough to keep your distance
You can't decide, you can't decide

We're gonna die like this you know,
Miserable and old...
Really gotta hand it to you,
Really gotta hand it to you
(Well just so you know)
Are you positive? Absolutely sure? (when we get home)
Just get dressed, don't do this (we're through)
Just get dressed, don't do this (we're through...)

It's a long way back south
(And to where I belong)
Well yeah you've been there once or twice
(And you still dont like it)
I say you just never gave it a chance
(Well give me a chance, give me a chance)
Besides did you ever stop to think
That we can keep this up, living like thieves?
(But you can't decide)
You can't decide
(No you can't decide)
Well you can't decide

We're gonna die like this you know (we're gonna die like this),
Miserable and old (miserable and old)
Really gotta hand it to you,
Really gotta hand it to you (miserable and old)
(Just so you know)
Are you positive? Absolutely sure? (when we get home)
Just get dressed, don't do this (we're through)
Just get dressed, don't do this (we're through...)

Are you positive?
Absolutely sure?
Are you positive?

We're gonna die like this you know,
Miserable and old...
Really gotta hand it to you,
Really gotta hand it to you

(Well just so you know)
We're gonna die like this you know (when we get home),
Miserable and old (we're through)
Really gotta hand it to you,
Really gotta hand it to you (we're through)
Are you positive? (just so you know)
Absolutely sure? (when we get home)
Well just get dressed, don't do this (we're through)
Just get dressed, don't do this (we're through)

Well just so you know
(I'm gonna die like this)
When we get home
(We're gonna hit or miss)
(And just in spite of it)
We're through
(We're gonna die like this)
(Miserable and old, and old)
Just so you know
(We're gonna die like this)
When we get home
(We're gonna hit or miss)
(And just in spite of it)
We're through
(We're gonna die like this)
(Miserable and old)

sounds like some girl that wanted to lose her virginity to adam and he didn't want to... possibly mocking brand new's "sic transit gloria... glory fades"

Yeah, Dudah sounds about right. I think it is about a girl dying to lose her virginity. I think she probably just got scared at the last moment and Adam wasn't an asshole so he didn't make her do it anyways.

But I like Brand New's Sic Transit Gloria. Its got a good beat.

Dude, has anybody had one of those girlfriends that gets "confused" all the time? They start liking other guys, or aren't sure if they want a serious relationship, or whatever their problem is. I had one like that recently, and I think that is what this song is about. For you consideration:

He goes to this girl's house, to pick her up... She says, "Umm, I want to talk to you about something.."

And this is where the song starts..

"Were gonna die like this you know, miserable and old.." These are his thoughts as she starts talking.. here we go again this will go on forever. "Really got it hand it you" I've got to say, you are the record for this kind of stuff. "Are you positive? Absolutely sure?" Is this for REAL this time? "Just get dressed don't do this," Come on this happens over and over again, let's go out already.

They take off on the date, the next section is the conversation of the date.

She says she was listening to Miles Davis before he came over, and his music is influencing her thoughts. She is confused, she doesn't know if she wants to get serious or bail out.

He says, do we really need to talk about this, can't we enjoy what we have? And his attitude of here we go again, makes her decide to break it off, hence the addition of "When we get home we are through"

I'm from the Carolinas, so I believe the next part is him talking about how he was engrained in his youth with certain traditions (as is common in the south) One such tradition is courtship, or the idea of dating a long time (2 years or more) before making any serious decisions about a relationship. Honestly, it's hard to adapt to other places, (Like utah where I am now) when people get engaged after a month. Her talking having "been there once ot twice" is her talking other relationships with southern boys. And he says, you never gave the long-term thing a chance. "Did you ever think we could keep living like thieves" is him saying, taking anything and running, like a relationshiip, doesn't work out in the end.

The rest of the song is him and her going back and forth on the ride home.. are you sure? Yes. We're through. Great. Are you sure? and so on until the end where they both decide.. we're through. ok. that's it. it's not about sex.

What you described is basically every girl I have met, save a few. It's not just you.

You're probably right. It's probably more like.." Hey, If we end up together, I wanna be in the south, cause that's home" and she's like .. umm.. no..

"Well just get dressed, don't do this" is the guy telling her that he's sick of waiting around for her and the get dressed part refers to sex rather than dressed to go out on a date or something. The guy is saying "just so you know when we get home we're through". He's just tired of playing around with her. Don't understand the title exactly, any thoughts?

This song is an obvious reference to the movie "high fidelity" with john cusack. The reference relates to John, in the movie, all time five greatest break up list... in chonological order. He states that "Number five with a bullet" is his recently ex-girlfriend linda. Because of this reference its obvious that the song is about a break up that he wasn't ready for.
