Salute My Shorts! Lyrics

When we broke down
In that small mining town
I was ready for quitting
My guard was down
It was summer all day
In your dad's Chevrolet
And so we decided to stay

And we want spectacular views
If we're to stay for the weekend
And you swear
There'll be no bad news
If we stay, if we stay without looking back

We'll take a small private room
With a window, please
If it opens, that's fine
To let in the breeze
We've been waiting all year
For someone to just say
Everyone fucks up, it's going to be ok

And the prop planes
They fly overhead
You can hear them returning
And maybe it's all in my head
But I'll save my complaints for tomorrow

And when you got sick
I was sad for some days
But I'm feeling much better
I just sleep it away
Now it's just like we never was
Some things go bad just because

And the freeways
They go coast to coast
They've taken away all my good friends
And I don't care if you're broke
You can't stay here tomorrow

And the dreams have come back again
But this time I'm not just watching them
It's me as pilot instead
And I land the plane all by myself
No, you can't stay here tomorrow

This is one of my favorite Rilo Kiley songs, I'm surprised no one else has commented. The pictures that it paints in my head are really nice.

One of the band members used to be on the show Salute Your Shorts.

Yeah, it was Blake who used to be on the show. This song is ever so loverly. It paints that picture of two people {(lovers most likely)] making their way, well, away, just from everything as they drive on the empty highway in the country. How wonderful.

I'm pretty sure this song is called "spectacular views." They have two called "spectacular views."

yes, but to distinguish one from the other, this one is referred to as "Salute Your Shorts!"

i love the recorde version, when blake sings. but live is pretty good too, because jenny sings it.

it's cool, because when they play spectacular views blake sings it, in concert, as opposed to jenny singing (which she does on the album. So they kind of switch the spectacular views.

the picture it paints is so clear I don't think you need someone to explain what it is about

I was so stunned when I made the connection between pinsky/joey the rat and Blake... Who would've thought two child actors would end up being in an incredible indie rock band together?!

The song is fantastic, but I agree it pretty much decribes itself.

It's weird because usually I don't like Blake's voice. In fact, sometimes I make snarky comments to my CD player when one of his songs comes on. But on this song he sounds good. So, I guess it's about two teenagers who were driving around in the girl's car, and they got stuck somewhere and stayed for a few days and had a really idyllic time. But they had to leave, and this happened a long time ago. Since then something bad has happened to the girl, and the guy is losing his feelings of connection to her. He doesn't even feel sad anymore about whatever happened to her. It's awfully depressing, I have to say.

Jesus Christ!

That is why Blake Sennett always looked so damn familiar! Holy shit!

Boy Meets World as well. Man oh man.
