Emma's House Lyrics

Early morning by the harbour
the clouds above form one sheep-like spray
Early morning by the harbour
Where you are
Where you now are
You have nothing to live up to
You have nothing to live down
Emma's house is empty
so why do I call it Emma's house?

Five to six that's what the time is
the cold cuts through my shirt of cotton made
Five to six that's what the time is
Where you are
Where you now are
You have nothing to live up to
You have nothing to live down
Emma's house is empty
so why do I call it Emma's house?

Where you are
Where you now are
You have nothing to live up to
You have nothing to live down
Emma's house is empty
so why do I call it Emma's house?

Rubyoverdiamonds, you are one of my favourite people in the world since you share my love of this song. What else could you ask for in a 3-minute pop song? Few bands have ever done melody, soul and yearning as well as the Field Mice, and this early effort has it all - in spades. What does this song mean to me? It means exactly how it once felt to be in love with someone unobtainable, and finding life-affirming solace in the redemptive power of a simple, unadorned pop song. Nice one, Bob.

My old childhood house is empty and you all know the rest.

One of my favourite songs of all time. 'Emma's house is empty, so why do I call it Emma's house?' Melancholy lyrical genius from the highly underrated Bobby Wratten, currently making music with the fantastic Trembling Blue Stars. Trembling Blue Stars being taken from the erotic novel 'Story of O'; 'his eyes were like stars, trembling blue stars...'

This song is so beautiful. i wish more people loved on a higher level than just thinking about how it's a classic, or a scene-defining thing or something.

So i sort of think it's about someone who has taken her own life. maybe it's the morning after it happened. you could also think about how, yeah, it's a lost love. she moved away maybe? i think the clues point particularly to suicide, though. mainly "where you now are / you have nothing to live up to / you have nothing to live down." also i was wondering if 555 was a symbol that implied she was now in the afterlife or something. i tried looking 555 and people mentioned "divine grace" and stuff, but that was the closest thing i found. number symbols in songs can have pretty off the wall personal meanings anyway. and he could also be contemplating, if she moved, how far away she is now. another time zone. but, idk. it seems like it has that solomn simplicity vibe that makes me thinks death rather than a friend now being in another part of the world. so beautiful and reflective and simple. and then yeah, the pop perfection.

typos. can't go back and correct them without backspacing? junk. solomn wins this time. and.. thinks.

My Interpretation

10toes, I don't think that this song is about a suicide. I think that the '5:55' lyric is a way of establishing distance between the lyricist and 'Emma', I think that 5:55 is the time in a different time zone, the time where Emma is. I think that the lyricist is struggling to come to terms with the end of a relationship with Emma. And that his struggle is best expressed by his relationship with the house in which Emma used to live. He can't see Emma's old house as just another house as he can't let go off her.

Emma packed up and moved away to a different time zone. Reminds me of exploring my friends' vacant homes once they had moved away. For all I knew they moved to another dimension.
