Emotional (Until Crickets Guide You Back) Lyrics
Christ, you're already gone
And I thought it'd take longer to kill you
And a month is no time at all
No time to reach down and erase you
You're so emotional
In the light of your mom's front room
I'm a thoughtless beast
Afraid of everything
And it's how you choose to see it
Strength or human needs
You're so emotional
In the light of your mom's front room
I'm so emotional
In the unforgiving light of the moon
And you lost your way home
And it feels familiar
And crickets guide you back
And you hear them calling
And it sounds familiar
And they might help you out
It's so hard
Emotional
In the light of your mom's front room
You're so emotional
In the light of the marquee moon
And I thought it'd take longer to kill you
And a month is no time at all
No time to reach down and erase you
In the light of your mom's front room
I'm a thoughtless beast
Afraid of everything
And it's how you choose to see it
Strength or human needs
In the light of your mom's front room
I'm so emotional
In the unforgiving light of the moon
And it feels familiar
And crickets guide you back
And you hear them calling
And it sounds familiar
And they might help you out
In the light of your mom's front room
You're so emotional
In the light of the marquee moon

oh gosh.
I thought I was the only one who'd think it was making fun of emo rock.
haha i love this song.
and the way they mke you think they're going to say emo, but then add the "tional" to the end of it.
I had a different take on this song, emo rock never even crossed my mind. I pictured this as a girl who broke up with her boyfriend (because she's the "thoughtless beast"), and she possibly did it in an inappropriate place. And he's gone ahead and moved on ("christ you're already gone") when she isn't quite ready to let him go ("a month is no time at all...to erase you") and she's feeling bitter when she accuses him of being "emotional" when she first dumps him, but in reality, she's the one having a hard time moving on when she screams "it's so hard!" I definitely think there's sincerity in this song, it can't all be about making fun of emo rockers XP
Making fun of emo rock perhaps? The scream sort of clues you into that one.
Any ideas what "in the light of your mom's front room" is referencing?
Also is "in the light of the marquee moon" a reference to the band Television? or am i reading into it way too much? probably the latter
i completely thought about television too when i heard this song, so at least you're not alone.
I could only find a live version of this, and there's no scream in it...
i always thought this song was kind of making fun of emo rockers too. but i still really like the scream. only jenny could scream so beautifully. <3
i think that even though we can make fun of people who are emotional like that but even if we dont show it everyone gets like that sometimes.
i dont think theyre making fun of emo rock. I have 2 interpretations. One is that someone she cares about is struggling with something major (possibly an addiction) the other (and the one ive always thought when i listened to the song) is that she wrote it about herself.
So my meaning is based on my assumption that she wrote it bout herself
the first verse could be her standing back and realizing she was weaker than she thought she would be. Like maybe she gave into temptation.
The chorus is something everyone can relate to... Places that bring out your emotions, such as your moms house.
As for the next verse, obviously now she IS talking bout herself. Shes saying shes a "thoughtless beast", like maybe she got so consumed with whatever shes going thru, that she became selfish. ~Honestly this song seems to be about an addiction~ She says shes afraid of everything but then she says "But its how we choose to see IT: strength or human need" The it is strength. If a person is strong, are they really strong or do they just try to meet their needs and do it successfully W/O BEING DEPENDENT ON OTHER PEOPLE/SUBSTANCES.
Chorus, again is about situations that make you feel emotional- hence the song title
This verse was the main clue that lead me to believe this was written about an addiction. Youve lost your way home, like youre so involved with your addiction youve lost the things that were important to you. It feels familiar, maybe shes been there before. And you here them calling and it sounds familiar and they might help you out. Maybe she knows people care about her and want to help her BUT ITS SO HARD, yes addictions are hard.
I know i wrote alot but this is a good song and should be given more credit than a joke... Peace~
she's talking to herself and i think its about how shes constantly going between belief and nonbelief, the idea of life without god is scary and shes emotional about it, especially at home where her mom raised her under atheism. the "light" is so-called knowledge of the inexistence of god which comes from her mom and childhood and then the crickets are the little voices that come in the 'darkness' that bring her back to hope in faith. of course ITS SO HARD!
in response to XianSnake... your comment made me think of the song diffenrently and i think you might be right, none of us know what jennys really writing about, but she does write about her struggle with faith, so it is a logical explanation... peace~
