I Need Some Sleep Lyrics

I need some sleep
You can't go on like this
I try counting sheep
But there's one I always miss

Everyone says I'm getting down too low
Everyone says you just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go

I need some sleep
Time to put the old horse down
I'm in too deep
And the wheels keep spinning round

Everyone says I'm getting down too low
Everyone says you just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go

You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go
You just gotta let it go

Actually, the singer of Eels, "Mr E", lost his father when he was 19. 1996, his sister committed suicide, and two years later his mother died in cancer. So, I´m quite sure this song is about the great lost of his family, and that everybody keeps telling him to realize they won´t come back and that he must move on without them. In second verse he sings, "time to put the old horse down" and probably realizes that it´s time for him to get a grip and live along without them. Think it´s "I need some sleep, you can´t go on like this" in the beginning of the song, and not "you can´t go home like this"... I really like this song, I lost my father a few years ago and kinda know what it´s like when you can´t understand that you won´t ever see that person again.

"There's one I always miss..."

Powerful. Here's a guy, too wrapped up in fighting with himself over some conflict he refuses to show the world, but this girl is and always will be the major player in what he decides to do (even if she doesn't realize it). He cant keep running, he cant keep doing this... but he wants to. But is it whats best for her? He will never know

I think someone in the Shrek crew must be a fan of the Eels, their surprisingly upbeat Beloved Monster was in the first film. This is a great song, simple, enchanting and passionate. I listen to it a lot when I get sick of yr12 homework

its like that place just before rock bottom. you're too far gone to pull your self out, but not far enough that you can turn around and do something about it.

Its about wrestling with a problem ... you mentally wracking brain trying to figure why, how, when and what and the thing is the problem is so deeply ingrained that your subconcious is awake and telling you to figure it out even though you know the outcome is already decided and you cant change it so you have to let it go. Having said that "putting the old horse down" is a cowboy term for shooting a horse that can't be ridden anymore so to contextualise it the singer has to end whatever situation has got him bothered because whatever it is doesnt work anymore.

My interpretation is that this is about messing up so hard that you cant even forgive yourself, even when everyone forgives you.

This is a great song. I first heard it while watching "Shrek 2" and I was like "this has to be the Eels." I was right.
