Gypsy Death And You Lyrics
You knock on the door
She don't recognize your voice no more
So she got on an airplane na na na na na na na not so long after
Straight down from the fever
Laid down in a hotel bed
Wouldn't take no phone calls at all
Didn't want no more voices in her head
If that's the way that you feel
Then that's they way
If that's the way that you feel, Honey, that's the way that you feel
In the blue part of the evening, sometimes it's hot
She thinks she hears you coming but she's stuck against the wall
Oh, she won't, she won't, so she do, she do
But now when she looks at you
She covers one eye cos she can see into your mind
She no longer wants to
If that's the way that you feel
Then that's they way
If that's the way that you feel, Honey, that's the way that you feel
She don't recognize your voice no more
So she got on an airplane na na na na na na na not so long after
Straight down from the fever
Laid down in a hotel bed
Wouldn't take no phone calls at all
Didn't want no more voices in her head
Then that's they way
If that's the way that you feel, Honey, that's the way that you feel
She thinks she hears you coming but she's stuck against the wall
Oh, she won't, she won't, so she do, she do
But now when she looks at you
She covers one eye cos she can see into your mind
She no longer wants to
Then that's they way
If that's the way that you feel, Honey, that's the way that you feel

so gorgeous, just... pricelessly gorgeous.
I remember when I first heard this song it was as if I could just drink her words as she cries them into stereo. Seriously, I can almost swear that she starts crying at the end of the track. And the chorus is just...amazing. I've been listening to the song on loop all night and I really can't stop playing it. It's beautiful. The chord progression is so raw and simple, it's like a sincere version of "Maps".
"Gypsy Death" means dying of a drug overdose, I don't know why, I learned it from the Velvet Underground song "Run Run Run" like The Kills probably did. So I guess that's what this song is about too.
I always thought she was laughing at the end. But now I think yeah, is she crying or laughing? :S I think it's about a girl that turns to drugs after a break up "You knock on the door She don't recognize your voice no more" She's trying to kill the memory of him with drugs. I have a friend who's doing that. And yes, it's Gypsy Death AND You.
i definitely think she is laughing.. its like she made a funny face and then Hotel looked at her and they burst out laughing or they just made eye contact and it was funny or something.. lol i do not think she's crying.
anyways beautiful and simple song, love the kills.
Maybe the fact we don't know if she's laughing or crying is part of the beauty and mythology of the song. 'Gypsy death' could be a play on words, is it a drug overdose or is it gypsy in the literal travelling sense of the word? I feel this song might be about when Alison toured with the Dead Weather. The 'she' could actually be 'Jamie'. It's just a theory :)
I completely agree with the beauty and mythology of the crying or laughing at the end. Mystery is beauty. So don't over think the simple things in the song.
and I also think the theory is a nice idea. However, this song is from their first album. Long before The Dead Weather was even a thought.
I think that maybe this song is the story of a girl in post-breakup or is trying to escape someone, who leaves on an airplane and is now in a hotel. She doesn't answer the phone because she's tired of people calling her and seeing if she's okay, or doesn't answer the phone when "he" calls. And she knew "him" so well she could practically read his mind, so now she doesn't want that connection anymore and closes an eye to take away the power of two eyes that could look into his mind and understand it. And I think that the end is a combination of what all of you commented - the crying and laughing. Crying because she is sad that she went through this, and is stressed out from her breakup, but laughing because she realizes how much of a fool she was to go out with him, laughing because it is over and she doesn't have to deal with him anymore. Does that make sense?
