sounds a bit like the voices are telling him not to succumb to self-indulgent melancholy. One of my favourite songs from MPII.

I wore out the first few meat puppet's records I played them so much. I remember buying MPII it just blowing me away. I had sort of moved from jazz/prog rock in the 70s to reggae and punk in the 80s, and this was an injection of melody and substance that I guess I was really missing. The song's lyrics don't really mean anything to me, since the melody itself pretty much eclipses everything else. I wish people would have a little more imagination about this shit though. "It's about tripping balllzzzz!" Really? That's all you can come up with?

i had originally thought this song described the onset of schizophrenia - auditory hallucinations, command delusions, bizzarre thinking. tripping on drugs would more likely cause visual hallucinations. but then somebody told me that curt had twins (katherine and elmo) around the time he wrote this song. that explains a lot! reread the lyrics thinking about kurt having newborn twins in the house, and all the relatives coming over to see the babies!

I think the song is about meditation, and being able to perceive beings from the spiritual world. Lets see...

Lot of people choose to meditate late at night, because are more relaxed, and usually there is more silence around. No dream's in sight means that even if very relaxed, they are not sleeping, but instead very present

And the sounds have no beginnings or ends And their glow is not a light

It may refers to perceive other beings while meditating. It takes many many years to understand and even more to communicate with beings from "the other side" but in the first years most people perceive something, described as whisperings, not voices like we hear in this world.

Their glow is not a light am almost sure it refers to their aura, some of them being so shiny and beautiful, like a light, but not one that we can see with our eyes.

The walls turn into waterfalls With water made of thoughts that call

In very deep meditations, and again after many years of practice, some people can have strange experiences, like being in another place, or being in the same place but with no walls, or begin to experience "special effects" like the one in this verse, and having the sensation and in some cases, the certainty that the spiritual world is more real than this one.

The thoughts that call could easily refers to other beings trying to communicate with us, wich seems to be difficult for them, because of our density.

Again, a reference to "them" probably trying to explain that are not royalty or Gods, but just spirits like ours. The blankets over us may imply that they are between us, that can observe us, even if we cannot see them.

Other possibility could be the ability that supposedly some of them have, to jump from the inmaterial world to the material world and back "tying in between"

"Things have changed now we are here" in my opinion refers to the future of humanity, after the spiritual awakening we will be able to be where they are, not having to come back here because we learned all we had from this world.
