I think this song is about a severely depressed, suicidal person. The song is saying don't kill yourself. You may be bakrupt and down right now, but you still have friends. It's saying don't kill yourself, your mother will cry. People care about you. Live your life for those you love until you can live your life for yourself.

hate to cite wikipedia, but "The period surrounding Yoko's conception and recording was one of great personal strife for the band - Kurosky split with his long-term girlfriend and three of the six band members went through divorce while the record was being written, rehearsed and recorded. Amid all this, the foundations of the band appeared to be shaking; rumours of a break-up were rife and well-founded. The mood of the album was certainly much darker and the band phased back much of their instrumentation, preferring to create more of a live sound than layering multiple overdubs atop the mix."
I haven't made a thorough analysis of this song, but im willing to bet the band's/Kurosky's problems are reflected in these lyrics. Think about it...every stanza here is about some kind of end
i'm pretty sure one of the members at one point became a born again christian, springing up a lot of biblical references halfway through their career as a band. i'm not 100% sure about this, or even which member this may have been. i just remember discussing this with my sister some years ago (she was either friends w/ someone in the band or friends of a friend. not sure.) so in short, this may really be about the end of days, and kurosky hoping that his band member may be wrong about it coming.
(im not heavily religious. this is all just my interpretation.)
Pretty sure it's about trying to stop a suicidal person from making a mistake. This makes it my favorite non-Elliott Smith song about suicide.
