Also...the video speaks volumes. I love the scenes where at first he's singing to the camera and then it shows what he's singing at...a brick wall. I think the brick wall is symbolizing human nature. It's our indifference to the scandals in the world and it's unwilling to bend. It's a brick wall...now that's pure genius in my mind.
this song isn't primarily an anti-war song but more of an anti-ignorance song, the lines in the courus are basically saying wether u are living in the east or the west racism nd lyeing to ur people is as big of a weapon as a suicide bomber or sudam hussain. the song isn't anti-british, american or against the people livin in the east, maxi talks as a child who's father is bein sent off to fight but this could be a soldier from any country as it would be in reality. The story thts bein told then ends by sayin tht aslong as the majority of the world continues not to act against the lies our goverment nd media feed us the state wer'e in will be a continuous vicious cycle!
The debate about Stowaway's son is totally wrong, the lyric is 'Soaraway Sun'. For the non-Brits the Sun is a tabloib newspaper which once advertised itself, in an excited tone, as.. "your soaraway Sun!"
@Scolopax Thank you, I away's thought it was "Soar-away Sun", Where I live in Toronto Canada, we have two major popular newspapers, The Sun, and The Star. We do also have that silly "Sun" tabloid here too. I think he is talking about a "Sun" newspaper since it would make sense that he would criticize to media outlets for putting out misinformation in the same line.

not trying to step on anyone's toes, but isn't the BBC brittish? so this song just couldn't be an anti-american song, but just an anti-war/ violance message in it. maybe his father was killed in a war or something. like in the line about his dad coming into his room and telling him he has a duty calling on him also for him and his sister to be brave, and to give his mother a kiss. maybe his message is that he has a grudge about war, that something might of happened to his dad
The bbc reference is interesting. The BBC were actually hugely against the war, they portrayed it in a very bad light and had a lot to do with investigations that resulted in the "dis information" we were fed before the war coming to light. I think the title of the song itself is just taking the piss out of the iraq has wmd bull. And the song powerfully urges us to look at the fact that it is the problems with the human race are the weapons of mass distraction. the repitition of "inaction is a weapon of mass distraction" as it is speaking to the listener directly, forcing you to look at the fact these problems are caused by you too.
Finally the war in Iraq was hugely unpopular in the UK so the song will be interpreted differently in America. Sorry but your media feeds you brainwashing tripe (Al gore's anti bush NSA spying speech wasnt shown on one of your main news networks). It isnt an anti american song, and isnt a direct referral to the war in Iraq, Id say it was more a general song asking us to reflect on humanity prompted by the war and using the "slogan" of the war to add potence. This is another fantastic example of faithless' skillful use of metaphors in social and political statements.

BBC viewers are often viewed socially as being posher than the ITV viewers. Where as the Stowayways son is to symbolise the lowest standing in society.
The BBC are required to be politically neutral and as such can be expected to provide a much more balanced view of the situation than anyone else. THe perception with all other channels ITN productions included being seemingly pro-war can and did provide the perception that the BBC were very much anti-war. I ocasionally watch Fox and Sky news for a laugh.

These lyrics are definitely wrong, because they're missing the verse in whic hhe says, "Why do all these people seem to hate my dad?...But now I'm geared up for the fight, and he would be proud of me - if my daddy came home tonight."
In light of this, can someone explain to me what actually happens to the narrator's father?
I assume, from the line "I have a duty calling on me," that the dad is sent off to war. But if that were the case, why would people hate the dad? Surely everyone's dad would have been sent off to fight?
I understand the political sentiments of the song - because they're pretty damn clear - but I'm afraid the lyrics just don't make sense.
@musical_snob There are two versions of this song, the Album version contains that verse, the remix that was released as a single that most people are familiar with does not contain that verse. The remix is also included he end of the album but was not originally intended to be on the album (I don't think since it is kind of stuck on at the end, while the rest of the songs all flow into each other seamlessly).
